Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Crap! Sonic cleaner died.

Curious as to what others are using in their sonic cleaners. I'm using a 50/50 mix of simple green and water after a soak in Berryman Chem-Dip parts cleaner.

I haven't found anything that works that doesn't tarnish aluminum or the carburetor metal. Tried Simple Green and that Awesome cleaner from the Dollar Store, they both worked but tarnished the metal. Tried vinegar, it cleaned some old screws and bolts but they rusted up right away, and it made some really nasty fumes. I won't be using that again.

Maybe a solvent would be the way to go, kerosene or something.

What to the pros use?

I use an extremely weak mix of Renegade parts washer solvent and water for standard degreasing duties. Works extremely well.

Where can I get this stuff?

All I can find online from Renegade is their parts washer, the tub and pump and everything.

Also thinking of trying Purple power and water. Anyone tried this?

Here's what I've got now. I purchased a basic case for under $8 as a test platform and installed the components to begin testing. Here's a pic of the assembled cleaner:

The lid fits well, but does make additional noise:

It seems to work well, but I'm planning on doing some additional tests.

Once everything is sorted out I'll post the final cabinet and test results.

I'm thinking of experimenting with adding an additional generator board and two more transducers to see what the effect is.

I did find that the source of my problem with the Branson 5200 is the generator board. I've ordered a couple of IFR341 N-channel Mosfets to replace the ones that are damaged or weak. Hopefully I'll have two sonic cleanser in good working condition.:D

This stuff is expensive. The funny thing is that they claim a 44lb shipping weight, but when it comes it's a five gallon jug with a few ounces of ultra-concentrate and instructions to mix with water to make the five gallon concentrate. Then we dilute it even further to get the final mix strength. This stuff really works and is planet friendly!

The only reason I can get it is because I'm in charge of maintaining the parts washer at work.

For the cleaner I used a product called Shellac Buster by Sharpertek. It comes in a gallon and you mix it with 85% water. It was about $60. but I made the mistake of having it shipped across the border. Later I met someone with an Ogdensburg address who does this all the time and could have saved the duties and tax. Amazing stuff though. I had previously done the carbs with Kleen-Flo carb cleaner - nasty stuff to work with, and could not believe what came out after half an hour in the sonic tank. No adverse reaction to the aluminum. It is non hazardous and eco friendly.

As I posted in that thread. You have to be carefull on how some companies spec out the cleaners. Most low power units are speced out as a combined sonic power and heating power level as a single power in Watts. Another words, a 160W unit may actually only be 60W of sonic power and 100W of heating power. That same unit is rebranded as many company names and carries the same 160W spec but some call out the actual figures while others don't.
Here is an honest company that really does call it as it is:

Is a 2.5L capacity large enough to submerge a single carb? The units we used on the flight line required that the parts be fully submerged to avoid the risk of leaving marks on the water level line on some parts.. not sure if that was just "better safe than sorry" SOP or an actual concern...

My VM22 carbs just barely don't fit under water, a little corner of it sticks out. All of the passages and things fit under the liquid. I can fit two at once, but apparently it cleans better with only one?

Sounds good, its the internals we're trying to get clean after all.. Could it be that the two carbs in at once absorb more of the vibes than a single carb? Interesting..

Do you have any idea what is the minimum gallon size to accommodate 4 GS carbs at once?

In order to do 4 at once you'd have to increase the size of the tank to around 14 inches long by 6 inches wide and 6 inches deep. Volume would be 504 cubic inches or about 8.2 liters. For that volume and mass you'd need about 400 watts of power @40khz.
