I have a 1982 GS550 That I cleaned the carbs at least a dozen times on. set the points as per the manual. I have also done a lot of work on it including new head gasket, base gasket, lightly honed the cylinders, new spark plugs. I set mechanical timing as per the manual as well triple checked my work.
The bike starts hard and only with full choke when it is cold then the rpms will skyrocket to 5,000rpm and usually when I lower the choke it will stall.
After a minute or so it will idle fine around 1200rpm but then when I try to crack the throttle it doesn't respond then the rpms jump up and hang then slowly drop.
The carb boots are all fine with no tears.
Air box is sealed as well as I can get it, I ended up using ultra black rtv to seal the lid.
What did I miss? Where else could the problem lie.
Could it be ignition related?
Oh yeah I also set valve lash to spec.
