I did the 530 chain conversion to my 80 GS1000E and now I am having chain clearance issues with the front chain guard mount. I am not really sure how I want to take care of this besides grinding the mount off and using the side cover screw as a pivot. My plan has not become to use a much longer screw to secure the side cover and drill a hole in the chain guard to support it and get the clearance I need for my chain. Any one have a better idea? What have others done when they did this conversion?

Thanks

How do you have the sprockets spaced so that it is closer to the guard?

Daniel

The sprockets for the 530 chain are smaller than was needed for the 630 chain. I kept the stock gearing equivalent in the 530 sprockets. This is where the chain falls with the new sprockets. The rear is a direct replacement for the stock sprocket and the front required a 6mm spacer behind it to keep the chain aligned. I have a chain alignment tool and the chain is straight.

You might want to look into that again. On my 1100, I'm pretty sure the spacer went between the sprocket and the nut.

Spacer goes on the front of the sprocket not behind.Doing the same conversion on my 78.

Sprocket need to be larger diameter, as close as possible to the size of 630 size sprockets. I have just done a 520 conversion on a gs1100. No issues at all.

If you look at the original 630 sprocket you'll understand why it comes after the 530 sprocket is put in place.

Looks like your sprocket is large enough... spacer on the outside is your answer 100%.

With it on the inside you just moved your chain 6mm out of line!

Think about it like this... at the rear wheel do you have a spacer behind the rear sprocket or do you have more thread showing through the sprocket? The rear sprocket goes back to it's original position & the width is lost from the OUTSIDE. The front needs to be the same... :)

I put the spacer on the outside of the new front sprocket now. There is a spacer on the back side (engine side)of the original sprocket. Do you leave this in or remove it? I removed it and I have more chain clearance now.

you need the spacer in the factory spot so the sprocket/or chain, will not eat up the cases

if chain is straight front to rear, then tighten the chain,it sounds like you have it to loose, the 530 is thinner than the 630 so i dont understand how other than it being loose, that it would rub the mount, i also am going to go 530 on my 750 so i dont know positively yet other than what i mentioned

OK Better check your manual,83 GS750E comes with a 530 chain.

As an engineer I find it difficult to understand how it is possible not to be able to work out that you might be creating the problem. However as an engineer I sometimes forget that what seems simple to me might not be to others.
I would suggest that you might consider getting someone with an engineering background to have a look at your set up & point you in the right direction. Your safety depends on it.

I will be putting the spacer on the engine side tomorrow. I found out today that with out it the chain does rub on the case. learning curves suck. Thanks for all the help guys.

i will def look i havent messed with it in a couple years just getting to it now, i think it did now that you mentioned it , i got a rear sprocket a couple years ago, but didnt remember , my front sprocket is real thick like a 630 ,maybe thats why i was thinking it was 630 stock,it just didnt look like a 530, but i believe your right, the 700 is the same size
