    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Does a Sport Fairing = wind protection?

How much wind protection does a sport fairing really get. I want on for my 650G. Mostly for how it looks. I like the tracy jawns. But I'm wondering, When I'm riding at 55+ is the wind going to just slap my uppder chest and helmut the whole time. Enough to make it uncomfortable?

Not if you tuck in low enough :-). But seriously, the amount of wind protection is directly related to how much of you is behind the windscreen. If you have a super low, laid back windscreen and you sit totally upright, yeah, you gonna get blasted.
 
Yep, on the highway I generally lay forward on the tank if I'm rolling 70+, I even put my feel back on the passenger pegs sometimes.

Rule of thumb for fairings is that you should just be able to look over the top of it. I have a National Cycle fairing, and I mounted it too low at first and got blasted right at eye level. Once I moved it up to where I could just peer over the top, it was smooth as glass.

I don't see the point of a sport fairing unless you intend to live on top of your tank.
 
I think you’ll be surprised how well it works. I had that exact fairing on a Yamaha and I have a Wes Cooley (similar size) on my GS1100E.

I like wind, but the real tiring thing on unfaired bikes is pulling yourself forward at higher speeds. It adds a lot of fatigue over the miles. This fairing will block almost all the wind from your torso, allowing you to sit in a comfortable position without much strain. Further, it’s low enough so you don’t get any of the disturbance and buffeting of your helmet. And I have superbike bars and definitely ride with my elbows bent, but don't lean too far forward. I never feel the need to lay down on the tank, because these fairings get rid of most of the push of the wind.

I hate full, frame-mount fairings. They block out way to much breeze, they’re heavy and they give you that disconcerting feeling of coming apart in curves, where the bars go one way, but your fairing and headlight keep pointing off into the cornfield. Plus, most provide their own wind issues (crosswinds) and lot of excess noise. Little bar-mount fairings like this work perfect for me. I can easily go 60 miles in a day without getting tired (as long as I also have earplugs).

This is the fairing I just put on my GS650G. I put it on strictly for looks at first, but am amazed at the amount of wind protection it gives you. No longer is the wind slamming me in the chest, now it goes up and over my shoulders and helmet. Between this fairing and the superbike bars I put on my little 650 is looking sportier and sportier every day. I'll have to post an updated pic when I get home.
 
okay, So I just bought that JC whitney one. Mellow, I would love to see a photo of her. Question. What color is the fairing. I spoke with JC Whitney and they said it's smoked. It that a color? My GS is black,so hopefully it will look good
 
It'll look great! Here's a black bike with the very same fairing. Granted, it's had some pin-striping added, but it's unpainted.

I *had* one of those lil viper cafe style fairings on my 1100G. Not bad, did a decent job of knocking down wind untill you were doing about 60 or so, then it just seemed to dump it in your lap. But, for the bucks it cost, wasnt bad. It developed a stress crack in one of the winshield mounts however, and i snapped it off. The Cooley fairing i have on it now does a MUCH better job of tossing the air over my shoulders/hat at high speeds. Its also a bit bigger than the lil one i had though. But damn i need to find a way to make it quit buzzing!

i want to get a cooley fairing for my 1k

they look good, and since they help a little bit it would be nice to have...

brother...let's see some pictures of the 1100 with that cooley. I was using you appalation picture as reference earlier today...

The fairing is black, the windshield is smoke. Hopefully I can get some pics up tonight.....i'll try....

What the heck is holding this bike up? Has the center stand been edited out? Is there a special anti-gravity field in effect? Or has the tank simply been filled with helium? :confused:
 
well it looks like the kickstand has been photochopped out... but its not leaning over at all either....

and if it were on the centerstand, wouldnt the back tire be off the ground more than that!!!

This is the windshield I put on my bike, it replaced the bikini fairing that was around the headlight

It is about the height of the bottom of my facesheild if I am sitting straight up. On the highway the wind just catches me about the top of my helmet and protects my chest. I don't get thrown around a lot.

Interesting headlight....it's been a while since I came across a bike light with the smaller parking/running light bulb....some European bikes had it stock, IIRC, but not with a green bulb (is that legal?:-k). What brand is it?
