    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Does carb gasket need gasket compound?

I've searched and maybe I missed this, but I'm wondering whether the gaskets on the carb bowls need any sort of gasket compound, like you put on head gaskets and such.

since I've not seen this mentioned in anything I've read, I'm assuming I don't need to put anything on the gasket.

Also, do the numbers in the carb top covers mean anything? I've got a 1980 GS850G. I'm thinking that the carbs were done at some point in the past 30 years. Anyway, in disassembling the parts, I noticed that inside the top cap of the no. 1 carb, the number 2 was stamped inside.

The cap for the no. 2 carb had the number 1 stamped inside.

Was this just a likely mix up from a previous mechanic? And does it matter? Should I make sure put the correct caps with the proper carbs?

No. The only place which the maintenance manual specifies to use
gasket sealer is over the half moon plugs for the valve cover.
 
I generally brush a thin layer of light grease on both sides of all gaskets to facilitate removal later on down the road. I've had the pleasure of scrapping every inch of an original valve cover gasket off a cylinder head a few times & it isn't that much fun...

The carb tops are all interchangeable...

Heads up. The front of the cam chain oring between the head and cylinder needs a little sealer love if you don't have a front bolt going up through the cylinder into the head at that point. Maybe 77/78?? Needs to be hi temp.
 
Thanks for all the answers! I didn't think i needed gasket compound, but wanted to be sure.
