    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have the top end of my '79 GS850 apart to do a re-ring, valve train inspection ,hopefully fix a small base gasket leak and install a dyna-s ignition. I have everything apart and clean and ready for the rebuild but I want to double check some things so I dont screw things up.

I have an OEM Suzuki base gasket, egg shaped o-rings, pistons rings and pins. The rest of the gaskets are vesrah and I also will be installing the SS bolt kit while I have the engine out.

My questions are as follows:
-Should I use some type of sealant on the base gasket? Some people have told me use a product like hondabond, or permatex copper spray, and some say put it on dry. What would yield the best results.

-Should I use assembly lube on the piston pins and cam journals or just oil them?

-Since I am going to be installing the dyna-s and new 3ohm green coils, do I need suppression wires or go the copper core route?

-Anything else I need to be aware of when putting this thing back together?

Oil the piston pins
A trick/ When installing the piston pin clips squeeze them and put them in the bore at a ninety degree angle and then just turn them into the groove.
Save you time looking for "Bing!"
I use Dynatek suppressed wires. As a matter of fact I have two extra sets.
I lightly coat the base and head gasket with Gaskacinch. Alot of folks will tell you not to.

Oil on the pins and cam parts is fine.

No goop on base gasket.

Make sure to get an OE cam chain tunnel (square) O-ring if your head gasket calls for one.

Hone the cylinder with a bottle brush hone before installing new rings

Use new valve stem seals

Suppressor wires with rubber plug caps OR copper core wires w/resistor plug caps - you choose

Thanks for the response guys. I do already have new valve seals to install as well as a new cam chain tunnel o-ring. Just finished honing the cylinders last night, and everything is looking pretty good. Im assuming I can just work those old valve seals out with pliers, are there any tricks to popping these old ones out?

They pull straight out with needle-nose pliers and some brute strength. Cursing helps too.

I think there are better tools for pulling them, like pliers with hooked ends that provide a better grip.

Otherwise, yank hard.
