    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I've removed all the bolts but it doesn't want to budge. I've smacked it with a mallet and a wooden block to try and knock it loose, but to no avail. Any tricks to get it off without damaging anything? I don't really want to try and smash a screwdriver between the cases... Any advice is greatly appreciated

Good advice, and I will. Pretty sure I counted 13, but hey, I've certainly done stupider things :D
 
A flat putty knife tapped in between the pan and the cases will cut the gasket loose and start getting things moving. Dont use the putty knife to pry, but to cut the seal. go around it in a few places and it will come off.. take your time and be sure not to gouge either of the mating surfaces.
 
Hmmm. still being a chore. I'm sure if I really gave'er I'd be able to do it, but the only reason I am is to clean the oil pick up screen. I've had the bike for 17000k and never done it. Is it that big a deal?

Go ahead and place your bike/model/year information in your signature file so that we all know what we're talking about. There may be some little trick that is unique to your model. Has the exhaust and its crossover been removed?

Post the make and model of your bike as well as it's year of manufacture.
13 bolts and not a hidden one?

My pan has bolts on the periphery and one in the middle of the pan.
Not really hidden but kind of.

Uing the mallet and a block of wood is the best option. There should be a flange on the pan that would allow you to give it a really hard blow.
 
Thanks guys. It's a 78 gs550. I'm confident I got all the bolts out, including the drain plug, which obviously wouldn't have anything to do with holding the pan on. I got the 13 from my manual, which for whatever reason says "once you've removed the 13 bolts holding on the cover...".

I've since moved on to dealing with my front fork tubes and seals for today. Any tips and advice are still greatly appreciated.
 
Yeah 13 it is, a lucky number.
Its the putty knife for you me old trout.
