Ok, 84 GS1150EF, Canadian bike. Yosh 4-1, K&N pods, stage 3 jet kit, just purchased the Dyna 2000 ignition kit with coils and wires.
Made a mount bracket for the brain box, made 2 brackets for the coils, and turned them 90 deg so the boots face outwards so they install in the stock location, and rerouted the main harness and some of the smaller harnesses between the coils to keep them outa the way and clean it up.
Box is wired, coils are wired, turned on the key and on/off switch and the red light on the box comes on and off as it should during the reset mode when power is applied as stated in the instructions.

As per the instructions, I have the green wire from the box yet to attach to the tach -input wire on the bikes harness. After going through the service manual more than a few times, I can't find this wire/connection anywhere. There's a great section in the manual that explains connections and diagnostics for everything else in the cluster BUT the tach!
Where do I find this input wire, and what color is it?

Second, the crank trigger wouldn't fit in the oem hole, and we took a dremmel tool and cleaned up the case a bit, but I'm sure it shouldn't be that tight. After carefully grinding a bit, I have it to the point where it can be moved for adjustment, (barely) and I plan on taking a bit more out as I'm not happy with it yet.
Has anyone else had this issue? Can I use some emery cloth on the trigger plate instead of the engine case? Will it bugger the trigger?

These are the last 2 issues I have, and I haven't found any postings on the site regarding similar questions.

Thanks guys

Pretty sure you don't have one because your tachometer is mechanical not electric, that ones just to run an electric tach if you ever wanted one
Should be that tight in there, someone else here must have this on their bike... You sure you removed everything from the old mechanical advance?

You might want to call Dyna, they have real good customer service.

Well, that would explain why I can't find the correct wire for the tach, (fell like such a noob)
as for the crank trigger, yes everything was removed, and the one going in was purchased new from Dynoman in tx.

I was thinking about the tach issue, if it was mechanical wouldn't there be a second cable? There is only 1 cable coming from the speedo gear on the front wheel and 1 big white plug with 10 or 15 wires for the cluster.

What about the tach drive adapter at the front of the engine?

I dont remember seeing anything. There is only 1 cable going to the cluster, and after fighting for an hr to get the stupid end started with the fairing on , this i am sure of.
This adapter you mention, its electrical?

If it's mechanical it will be driven from the front of the motor near the center just below the cam covers. You would also see the cable coming into the tach housing. There is only a speedometer cable listed for the instrument cluster, but the details of the parts diagram I looked up were not clear enough to show electrical connections. It didn't look like there was a threaded part on the tach for a cable. I'm guessing it's got an electrical hookup. I think most of the GS series after '80 had electronic ignitions so you might start there or look for a connection on the tach.

I just got through looking at a parts diagram and it's only showing a speedo cable. No adapter shown either in the area of the cylinder head which would indicate to me that the tach is electronic.

So with that settled, (thank you everyone) any idea where/what color wire I hook up so I can continue to have a tach?

So if I understand correctly, electronic tach is triggered off the negative coil leads? So, the black/yel wire on the neg side, tie into that and we should be good? I remember tying that one back on the harness as the orange/wht power wires went to the red on the dyna module.

Brown wire from the tach/cluster hooks up to the ignitor/dyna 2000.

The black/yellow wire was just used as a tach signal on that particular bike (gs1100).

Excellent, thanks guys, tonight I can finally melt the new tire sticker thats been buggin me for 2 months.

I have a pdf copy of the service manual, if anyone wants a copy pm me and i'll email it.
