Anyone know the specific differences between the green, gray, and red dyna coils? I am under the impression that the Greens are 3 ohm, Gray 2.2 ohm, Red 2 ohm? Is this correct? What are the prefered application of each of these coils? How do the dyna coils compare to stock.

Also any input as to dyna ign vs. stock electronic ign would be appreciated.

No one's said much, so I'll chime in with a teeny bit.

I've got a Dyna S on my bike with the green 3 ohm coils, so your right about that.

You don't give the year or model of your bike, so its hard to say how much improvement you might get over stock. I had a worn out points ignition system, so the Dyna S was a big improvement over what I had. Much better spark. Also with automotive style plug wires, you don't have to change the coils or dig out the plug wires to change them. Needs a mechanical advance as well, at least the Dyna S does.

Mark, Thanks for the input. Your right in that I forgot to include pertinant info on my bike. It's an '80 1000G w/stock electronic ign and coils. My intention is to keep the suzi ign as it is dead reliable (the Dyna S ign being more of an upgrade for points systems.) However, I routinely come across excellent deals on used dyna coils. I am wondering if they are a noticable improvement over stock. My spark is blue and fair, but never white and hot. I did replace the thirty year old plug wires, But saw little improvement. My biggest question at this point is What difference would it make if I were to use the green, red, or gray? I understand that points systems require 5 ohms of resistance-3 ohm coil w/2 ohm resistors. Now, are the electronic ignitions sensitive in this area also, or would any of these coils work, and what pros or cons are involved?

Im curious on this too...Ive read on many of the hotrodders sites that the stock points and coils simply wont get hot enough for a bore kitted engine and that to get the most out of you fire you should switch to not only the Dyna system but the coils as well...Is this just commercial to sell coils (not that they'd get anything from endorsing them) or is changing out the coils AS WELL as the points system optimal?

Cafekid, The Dyna S ign is widely touted as an improvement over the stock points ign. I however, have an '80 model that has factory electronic ignition. All the reaserch I've done seems to say stick with the stock if its electronic. I belive any one of these coils will work with the ign that I have. The points system though is more sensitive to resistance.

I have an '80 GS1000G also. I am using a Dyna ignition setup. The green coils are 3 ohm.

This is the best modication I did to the bike. The bike starts, runs & idles better than ever. It was installed three years ago; never had a problem.

My 77 is points and condensors, so i will be upgrading to the dyna system. I was just curious as to what the positive improvement (if any) there was to the aftermarket coils vs using the stock ones..

You need the 3ohm green for Dyna S or stock electronic as on your 80. I have the green ones. No real improvement. They work same as the old ones did! It's not really a performance upgrade that you'd notice while riding.

For points you either need a 2ohm ballast resistor or you need to go for the 5ohm coils. I think they are the red ones.

Dan :)

I need the ballast resistor to use the stock coils?? I was told NO ballast resistor with the stocks.

My understanding is that the Dyna S ignition can use either 5 or 3 ohm coils, but 3 ohm is preferable. If you have points and need new coils, you can get the 3 ohm coils and add a 2 ohm ballast resistor in series - this provides a better upgrade path if you want to add the Dyna S ignition later.

Actually i want to rid myself of the points right now, and keep my stock coils untill i buy new...if thats possible..thats what im asking about..
