I have a question regarding the conversion to DynaTech electronic ignition on my GS1000G 1980 australian edition.
Do I have to retain the ignitor in the system ?
Or can I run the leads from the ignition straight to the coils.
It seems that the instructions do not mention this.
Somehow the instructions have dissapeared so I cannot look it up.
I am running new green Dyna coils as well

If we are talkingg about a Dyna S, yes it wires directly to the coils. Your old CDI is no longer needed. On mine: White to coil 1-4; Black to coil 2-3; Red to the orange/whites on the other side of the coils.

You can get the instructions here: http://www.dynaonline.com/skins/downloads/Default.aspx

I had an issue with wire terminal clearance when i put in my green coils. I had to "jack" they up to keep the terminal from grounding on the frame, not sure if your bike presents the same issue. I used a longer mounting bolt with some extra nuts for spacers.

GS bikes don't use a CDI, other than that matt's advice is correct.

While you are performing the mod you may want to measure coil voltage. If the coil voltage is more than say 1/2 volt less than the battery voltage, you may want to clean some connectors or perform the coil relay mod.

Good luck

I did foresee the "grounding out" problem already and did cut the excess steel lugs down from the frame plus added the extra insulation to prevent spark jump back to "earth" by appling liqiud insulation goo as well.
Thank you for the explanation and I will wire them straight to the coils.
I need to get a battery and would like tro know the correct # to get the right one.

Thanking you all Gentlemen.
We are getting there!
A battery on order and it should be brooom brooom day!

Hi,

That's a fine looking machine. Thanks for the pic!

Thank you for your indulgence,

Nice bike!

Am running a Dyna S in my 850 and have the green coils too .
Brilliant system you won't regret.
Ditto on the getting rid of your ignitor....what a weight saving!

Yeah, not much but I got also rid of the hiddeous foot pegs and a set of pasenger RZ500 pegs now are in their place.
They save about 5 ton:D
Still waiting on Battery.
But is is very hot here at the moment nearly 40degree cel.
Hope it cools of soon.

Good tip from Ed on coil voltage drops. In fact my recommendation is to power the entire ignition circuit on the relay mod (coils and DynaS).

I have posted mt prefered method for doing this in the past.

Good job!! Best to deal with this properly, I have seen it not dealt with and left the rider stranded on the road.

i have a problem with no spark from coils but both coils have power from dyna s ignition. i think there may have been spacers on bolts for coils . could this be a reason for them not working as thats only thing a can think off when i replaced them

The power to the coils is from the ignition switch or "coil mod" relay. The Dyna S needs internal power but does not provide power to the coils. The Dyna S only grounds the negative side of the coil which is what allows current to flow producing a magnetic field in the coil. Only when the Dyna S opens the ground and the magnetic field collapses does the spark occur.

i am new to this bike fixing haha .
another thing is the connectors onto coils are barecas i crimp new ones on wires gonna put some insulating tape on them not sure if that could be problem.
