A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Dyna S install timing marks not lining up

79 GS850. I've installed my dyna s but am having problems getting the correct marks to line up. In order to have the 'advance' mark line up (the line to the right of the "F" mark for 1-4) ,and it really won't exactly, I have to have my plate rotated to the extreme and my pickup adjusted so far it is barely being held on by one screw. The bike doesn't idle great, sputters a bit, much like it did with the points in. any idea's why everything has to be to the extreme like that? Followed the directions that came from dynatek but can't figure this out.

Are you rotating the advance (rotor in the center of the Dyna) clockwise to line up full advance mark?

I started the bike and ran it at 2500 and timed it with my gun.

Check the advance for stiffness.
Is the light just basic without all the retard/advance settings?

yup, just a basic timing light. I'll go out know and check but I'm pretty sure the advance is working smoothly. I'll maybe try setting the timing staticly with the advance rotated. I tried to think what could be wrong mechanically with the bike (crank, cams, etc...)that would cause this but that's a bit advanced for my mechanical mind.

You probably did not move the pickups on the Dyna S before timing so try placing the plate centered in the slots, ie screws in the middle of the slots. The pickups should be symmetric to each other so if you found it necessary to move the pickup so it's being held on by one screw you probably over did it. While things are fresh I would suggest resetting the position of the pickups and check it there.

Although no two bikes are the same I found the centered position to be timed correctly. My Dyna S is 20 plus years old so I cannot comment on the current installation instructions.

once in a while they send the wrong center magnetic piece in the kits.
KZ and gs look almost identical and are about 10 degrees different. and there are 2 different KZ types too.

it is a possibility the part is incorrect - call Larry at dyna tech support. They are very good at customer support.

you should get it timed with out having to make the adjustment channels bigger.
