    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Dyna S static timing - test light always on

As the title says... My test light is always on while trying to set my static timing.

I just installed the Dyna S this morning, and I've completely torn it apart and re-installed it twice.

My wiring looks like:

Dyna S WHITE output to Coil #1 yellow wire (Emgo coil p/n 2472451)
Dyna S BLACK output to Coil #2 yellow wire
Coil #1 black wire joined to Coil #2 black wire, both to switched 12v.
Dyna S to switched 12v

The switched 12v for the Dyna S and the black wires is the same source. Switched 12v from my ignition switch.

The white wire from the Dyna goes to the coil for 1-4

The black wire from the Dyna goes to the coil for 2-3

You have mentioned in your post coils #1 and #2, but that does not help as either coil or both could be feeding the incorrect cylinder compared to the hookup on the Dyna S.

The switched wire coming from the ign switch to the coils with 12v constant should be O/W, this wire should also power the Dyna S unit.

Is this a new Dyna S unit that you have purchased or 2nd hand.

Do you have the Dyna S wiring diagram. Is it kokosan or nippon denso.

I don't have my wires hooked up to the plugs yet. Waiting on plug boots.

My ignition switch has been bypassed, and replaced with a toggle switch. I've poured over the wiring diagrams and the Orange/White is just a switched 12v, which is why I used the switched side of my toggle switch.

Not sure, because the bike previously had a Dyna III. The tech at Dynatek told me which part number to order, and that's what I've got.

Like I said... The primary concern is the fact that my test light is always on. I haven't even been able to try to time it yet.
 
On P.4 of the Dyna S Installation, Timing & Trouble Shooting document it says:

"During timing, if the test light remains bright at all times, it indicates that there is a bad connection in the wiring. Ensure that there is 12v at the red wire."

forget the test light , put a plug into the #4 wire and turn the ignition system on. (if it's all hooked up) - or hook it up and insulate the connections then;

just turn the crankshaft with a 19mm wrench and watch for the spark

you want the F mark to line up when it snaps. test 1-4 and then test 2-3

if you have any other problems from directly shorting 12+ power to the white or black wire while the backing plate was grounded you may have to get another "S" unit.

If I kick it over, I get spark... So I know it's firing. I didn't get a chance to check timing yet. Just to confirm... This is a really awful wiring diagram I drew just now. Is this correct?

I didn't have that already. I just read through it quickly, and it sounds like it's just the Harley version of the manual I got w/ my Dyna S. I have Dynatek p/n DS3-2.

According to that link, my stuffs wired correctly.

Seriously, I'm very close to borrowing my dads truck, dragging this to a shop, and paying out the ass just so I can ride it again. Anyone near Queen Creek, AZ and want to help me figure this out? I'll compensate you for your time but I'd rather have someone that knows the GS's than some guy that works on modern supersports all day.
 
I had the same problem with my brand new unit on the 1-4 side. I tried it on the 2-3 side and it worked how it was supposed to.....I called dynatek and was told it is a short in the unit. They are very helpful give them a call. I had to ship the unit to them in Montana for diagnosis and repair.

I'm sure you have yours working by now lol but just in case someone is searching for a solution to the same problem....
