A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I have installed a dyna s on my 79 gs850 and have a question about statically timing it with a test light. Do I line up the mark that is before the "F" or the mark after "1-2" with the timing plate mark. Thanks for any help

At idle it should line up with the F1&4. The second notch should line up when advancing at over 3000 RPMs. If it doesn't line up on the second I'd check your mechanical advance for sticking due to being rusty or dirty.

Best to do it with a timing light Otherwise line up the marks & turn the plate assembly and watch for the point you get spark at the plug. T mark 1&4 with the motor off- top dead center. F with the motor running at idle something around 10 deg before TDC

I have never tried this, but I don't think you can do a static timing check with electronic ignition. :-k:idea:

Maybe someone who has done this can confirm or correct me?

The Dyna S uses the mechanical advance off the bike as well as the existing timing plate. The sensors have to be aligned properly against the TDC marks on the plate to work right. Mine came with instructions on how to statically adjust it - basically you hook up a light to the output and cycle the crank manually, adjusting the whole sensor plate for 1-4, and adjusting the right sensor for 2-3. They recommend you do a static adjustment when it's first installed and then use a timing light to do a dynamic adjustment once the bike is running again.

Once the timing is set, I'm pretty sure it's done - you don't have to mess with it again unless the sensors move. Also - I haven't done the dynamic timing on mine yet, and it seems to work just fine. There's some idle roughness but I think it's the carb passages.
