    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Dynatek Ignition Switchover

I have a 1982 GS850GLZ that I am restoring. I am considering replacing what I believe is a weak electrical ignition system. The main choice is the Dynatek 2000 ignition, coils and wires which total about $400 in a kit from Dynatek a savings of about $50 when you purchase the coils seperatly.
Is this worth doing? Will this increase performance? Is there anything I need to know before make a purchase such as this? I don't want to go as far as changing the exhaust, replacing the airbox, carb jets etc, at least not at this point in time. From what I read this seems to be a common change over and wondered if it really makes a signifigant difference in starting and running? Anyone who did it and didn't notice a difference? Any insight on this subject would be much appreciated.

I have run both a Dyna 2000 and a Dyna "S" on my 85 1150. There was no difference in performance between them. I think the Dyna 2000 is slightly easier to time, but neither is difficult. I found the Dyna coils (you need the 3 ohm NON CDI) resulted in the bike starting a little easier and idling a little smoother. There was no power increase over stock coils. There also was no difference in gas milage between stock coils and Dyna.

Can Dyna coils be installed without any other changes to the ignition system on the 850? The wires on the stock coils can't be replaced or so it seems so I was going to switch over, however if the coils will work without the ignition 2000 then that seems the way to go. The ignition is electronic as it is so will it support the new coils providing they are the 3 ohm as what is in there now? The connectors from the ignitor unit (CDI) those will connect to the coils without any problems or will I have to replace the connectors?

You can fit the green 3 Ohm Dyna coils on the stock ignition no problem, I have this setup on my Katana along with 9 mm suppressed Mallory cables.
You will have to use the connectors Dyna provides with the coils.
 
I just installed 2.2 coils and I had a set of 7mm plugs wires from my 302 Falcon laying around. They plugged into the coils just fine so I just cut them to length and screwed the caps into them. So far so good.

For the average bike, this is very much true - where the 2000 has a big advantage is when you require the additional features the 2000 brings - rev-limiter, electronic advance / retard settings, take-off for an electronic tach - the 2000 can even adjust the retard settings based on a boost sensor on the turbo system.

I run the Dyna 2000 on my turbo bike to get the retard settings and the rev-limiter. But on other bikes I own, I wouldn't put a Dyna 2000 on them if they are a fairly stock street bike - it's really overkill.
