Ok, so heres the story.
Driving to work this morning. Everything is going great. No funny noises, no acting up on the bikes part. All of the sudden, in 5th gear, the revs go way up and the bike is slowing down. Felt just like i held the clutch open or placed it in neutral. i backed off the throttle, I down shift, same thing throught the range of gears. I coast off to a parking lot ahead and check a few things before i depart and leave the bike for the day.
heres what i found..
-bike wont move under its own power in any gear.
-clutch seems to be working. (when viewed through oil filler.)
-placed bike on center stand, engine running. rear wheel not moving. Put it in first, wheel turns. stopped the wheel. put bike in second, wheel turns. stopped the wheel. Repeated for all 5 gears. same results. Basically, wheel rotates when unwieghted.
-tried riding again, no luck. still wont move with me on it.
-placed back on center stand. turned it off. placed it in 1st gear. tried rotating rear wheel....whoa momma. it turns freely in both directions with a faint, rapid, clicking/popping like noise coming from the "pumpkin". Then while rotating the rear wheel by hand, I pinch the rubber boot to feel for movement in the u joint at the secondary drive. no movement there. I had a firm grasp on the connecting plate portion that the prop shaft bolts to, but not so firm as to limit movement.
That was the best troubleshooting i could do without the time or tools. I had to ruck it home in a hurry carrying all of my gear so i could get to my jeep and get to work. Which is where i am now.

My suspicions are as follows(could be one or more of the following);
-splines stripped
-broken prop shaft
-or trashed bearing allowing the gears to skip in the final drive housing.
Im leaning towards the splines since it could move the wheel freely with no movement in the u-joint, and prop shafts generally are tougher i would think. Am I right in my thinking?
If anyone has anything else to suggest as far as possible damage, please, by all means reply.
Thanks
Vince

Sounds like the splines to me. Take it apart and you will see for sure. I had this happen to me with a 1100. Look for thread under my name for some cool pics of a PO fixing it improperly.

WOW! I cant see the pics because of the wonderful websense filter our work uses. But from the descriptios, i can see it in my head. and i dont like the sound of it. I pray my bike wasnt done the same way! lol

BTW. If it turns out to be the rear splines, if anyone has a spare or a good condition used rear spline theyd be willing to part with, please shoot me a pm.
Thanks.
Ill update once i find the culprit.

in case no one gets the title.......Ed Murphy for Capt. Ed Murphy. The person that Murphy's law was named after. eh, im bored.

You had no early odd noises coming from driveshaft? seems strange that pumpkin would not gradually get noisier and noisier till you couldn't stand it. I could see bolt that holds u-joint on suddenly snapping, but the pumpkin should offer some warning unless it's the drive shaft splines into the pumpkin.

Splines. I'll bet a $4758585837465848. Any takers?
Had my 1100G blow through two hub splines. First one died quietly. Second one went BANG and the entire bike shuddered and then just like yours..
Wheel would spin on the center stand but under weight it wouldn't budge.

PM sent.
I have a spare in "not-to-bad-of-shape"... But I'd strongly recommend getting a new one. They run about $140 depending on where you get them. part number 64680-45113

Bingo!
Sorry for the delay. My laptop at home is down also.
My splines were toast. And no, tom, unfortunately, there weren't any warning noises. I was cruising happily along at 55-60mph and then it felt like the clutch disengaged. Pretty strange. Ill post a pic when i get to a pc that will allow me to.
I Pulled my bike up on the center stand at home. dropped the wheel out and did more trouble shooting. Its the splines and the splines only. They were sheared off with less than 1mm left at the pumpkin side. They were the dreaded gold splines i read so much about. lol. There was a fine metallic dusting in the grease on the splines, and inside the wheels hub and on the back plate of the pumpkin. No actual chunks of spline. The bike has a touch under 40k miles on the odometer. yay!.....
The good thing i noticed is that the part is still being used in 2011 boulevards. Hopefully with better materials.
And D, PM sent.
Thanks guys.
