A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a 1983 GS 550. I have a new battery this season and I had replaced the rectifier earlier this year as well as it was not working properly. I had ridden it earlier today. But when I went to start it after lunch, it turned over briefly but then everything went dark. Usally the head light and the indicator lights turn on when you turn the key but I can't get any of that to come on. I am guessing some type of a loose wire. Any ideas of where to start?

THere are tests you will need to do that involve a volt meter.
I assume your battery is dead due to a failed charging system.

Not nice news.... can you check the stator output and the charging system's?

Grab your voltmeter or test light (the test light will be quicker), follow the current path.

- Verify that the battery is still good.
- Verify the MAIN fuse is good.
- Verify power coming back from ignition switch to the other three fuses.
- Verify the three other fuses are good.

.

You say that it turned over a bit and then died, that Sounds like a flat battery, I'd put that on a charger, but 1st make sure the electrolyte levels are above the lower level and top up with distilled water as necessary. Batteries don't last forever no matter how well you treat them.

If the bike starts after you put the recharged battery in then your next task is to find out why it isn't charging, this is probably a lose wire, a broken regulator/rectifire or a blown alternator.

and if you don't have a volt meter then you should buy one, they are useful for many tasks not just for motorcycles.

thanks for you help. Before I even got the fuse panel off, the power had returned and I was able to start it right up. So I must have a lose connection somewhere. But I will keep the checklist so I can troubleshoot if the problem resurfaces.
