    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have an accessory outlet on my bike, can i hook up a male plug to a battery charger and charge my battery just by plugging in the outlet?
 
Yes assuming that the plug is not wired thru the ign switch & is tied direct to the battery (on all the time)
 
So i'll have the rectifier, accessory outlet, the pos and neg cable, and the volt meter conneted to the bat is ok? should i get a big plug post connection to put them all together

I would hook all of the accessories up thru an additional 15A fused circuit to the battery. The reg goes direct to the battery
 
Bostrom: The outlet and volt meter should be run through the fused accessory circuit. Albeit the wiring on the thermometer is probably so thin that it would burn away before blowing a fuse. The rectifier should go to the battery or if the wire is too short go to the battery wire on the starter relay.

Oh yeah, did your battery minder come with a fused plug? If I wanted to charge my bike with the battery in I'd just connect the charger up to my heated vest plug which is already fused and it reduces the wiring a little. Never done it though, when I bought my 400 the regulator was smoking because the owner had charged the battery in place with a car charger the day before.

You would normally disconnect the battery from the bike's electrical system when putting the battery on charge. I would not consider lhaving everything wired direct to battery and connecting a charger to the battery.
Forget the convenient charging plug and disconnect the battery from the bike whenever you need to connect a battery charger to it.

I fully agree with EARL even as LAZY as I am I still take the time to remove the batt. when I'm charging even for just a trickle. I dont like the Idea of supplying too much voltage and current thru the bikes elctronics. you can never tell what might fail from it. :wink:
 
The above 2 posts are excellent advice. If, however, you decide to add a 'convenience plug' for a charger, MAKE SURE that the charger supplies NO MORE than 1 amp Total. This is the max that the GS's electrical can withstand with current 'backflowing' through the system. NEVER use a car charger to charge a MC battery unless it is an automatic one, and only then, if the battery is removed from the bike. :twisted:
 
you can wire a solar batter charger to a plug and use the cig lighter for charging. this will not hurt the system small solar chargers are around 30 bucks and run way under 1 amp.
 
yea the charger i was going to use is a 1/2 amp auto charger. right now i have the accessory plug on the screw posts provided just below fuses, and the R/R and Volt Meter, to the batt. I want to crimp ALL the wires to batt to a single connector, i guess that would make charging easier
 
I have two bikes and even if I do not ride one of them for two weeks, there is no need to put its battery on a charger. If I am riding the bike, the charging systems maintain the battery at full charge. If your charging system is operating properly, I see no reason why you would need a battery charger at all for normal use of the bike. If the bike is in storage over the winter, the battery should be removed from the bike anyway. If you need to plug your bike into a battery charger on a regular basis, you have a problem and a battery charger is not the solution.
