We are pretty fortunate here to have reycling bins supplied by local council and collected every other week along with normal kerbside garbage bin collections...so containers arent a problem...

...in the last couple of years I have disposed of old oils directly into a compost bin with all the lawn cuttings etc....

...the oil breaks down and composts very quickly with lawn cuttings and the gardens thrive...\\/

I'm pretty sure this wouldnt be the case with synthetic oils though

I just throw them over the fence. :shock:


Seriously, I refill them with old oil and when my son comes over I stick them in his trunk.......(He's a manager at Schucks AutoParts and they recycle there....also "25% family discount" on parts and supplies...woo hoo).

I think the half-life of a plastic quart is a bit more than 2000 years. Try NEVER (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biodegradation#How_Long.3F) .

If you want to just toss it in the garbage, go ahead, but i do enough damage as it is , and I'd like to have children one day (maybe they could have children too?)[-o<

That can't be good! Used oil is brimming with carcinogens. If these folks don't have some kind of fancy scrubbing technology, I'd hate to breath the air in the neighbourhood.

My used oil goes into a 5 gallon plastic gas can I marked for that purpose. I dump the old oil at the local repair shop, and recyclers pick it up there.

What he is talking about is an oil furnace specially made for this purpose. Many garages are getting them. They are deemed to be safe and environmentally conscious. If they truly are I do not know but it is supposed to help the cause, not make it worse. That was the idea.

From reading others' posts on this it looks like our county recycling program is pretty good. We have to seperate the plastics but the hauler picks it up next to the trash. As for the oil, wally world takes it back. A funny thing happened to me once there when I was trying to return the used oil-

There was a young woman behing the courtesy counter and she (really did) want to give me my money back for the oil even though it was used! She really had no idea that they took used back. She had to call a manager as she really did not believe me when I tried to expalin it to her. Now, when I buy new oil at walmart I check to make sure it IS new- They obviously did not train this girl!
