    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ever have something fall off and not know it? I lost one of the cam shaft end covers. Two questions; Are these things hard to come by? And, is it real necessary to have them on? I don?t see any oil leaking, just what do these things do? Make it pretty? Well, in my case it is sort of like mammary glands on a box car. :D

they are purely cosmetic. dont serve any purpose than to look pretty. you can easily run without them but if you want to replace it they are readily available on ebay etc
 
They're maybe $12 - $15 new, but they'll be chromed like the ones on the later models. I think your '79 had polished and clear coated end covers, which look slightly different.

I've got a stack of these covers -- they're all fairly grungy, but they polish up quickly enough on a polishing wheel. One of my chrome ones fell off years ago, so I replaced it with a polished one, and you have to look close to see the difference.

Thanks for the input. I travel the same road daily and one would think I would have noticed a big hunk of stuff falling off, or that I would spot it on one of my trips to and fro. Glad to know it isn't all that required. If I ever pull the Windjammer off I might need to replace it:p.

Be thankful that you have cam covers that bolt on from the outside. The round 650 covers bolt on from underneath and are nearly impossible to replace without pulling the valve cover off.

I had one of these fall off and land on my right boot. Try reaching down to grab it while doing the double nickle:eek:. Thankfully I got it wedged between my foot and the clutch cover before it fell off into neverland. I use a little bit of lock tite to prevent them loosening.
