    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I want to black out my engine on a 1983 GS850G. What is the best method/materials for such a project? What to paint, what not to paint, what brand/type, gun or spray, preparation? If you have done please let me know. Thanks.

I have found a lot of posts concerning the dont's when it comes to painting the engine but very little about the how's and what's. I am going to consult with a dealer today and when I find the right combination and begin the project I will document my progress. Again, Thanks.

Dont know if you saw this link. Going through this right now, it not not obvious that everybody will do this the same way. It depends on how much you want to do, how much is needed and how you want to do it. You need to take the various tricks and traps and formulate your own plan.

To paint the engine you basically have to:

1.) get the engine clean

degrease, and brush; I did a media blast.

I used the Harbor Freight Walnut media blaster on the engine after plugging all holes very well.

2.) Paint: I used Por -15 paints (corrosion inhibitor and the engine paint)

refer to their Por-15 website and instructions ; you need marine degrease, metal prep and solvent. I would strongly recommend getting a full face mask/respirator, coveralls and hood from the paint store. I did not at first but I have one now.

One trick you are going to have to work out is that the engine has a bunch of oil in it and as you try and take off covers and paint oil seeps out. Even if you have drained all the oil. In hindsight, it is probably best to clean and paint the engine with all of the old gaskets in place; then just clean and replace after everything and clean and repainted.


I'm hanging brakes at the moment.

I was planning to leave as much of the engine together as I can. Lucky for me this bike does not leak at all. Thanks for your recomendations.
