A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So I went to my local salvage yard and found a set of case guards on a bike. They look to be in good condition with no peeling of the chrome. The guy says he wants $30 for them? Are they worth it? Just not real sure on the price point on these things?

Thanks.

If they fit your bike and you like the looks of them, then sure. Where else are you gonna find them that doesn't involve shipping costs and a wait?:)

Thinking I will have to get over there and grab them now. Thanks for the input.

One last question, are they pretty much universal between years?

Thanks again.

Sometimes. Not sure if the '82 1100G had different mounts than the 1000G, but 850G bars (of the same years) would fit for sure.

The 1000G was only out for two years, '80 and '81, there were no changes other than paint, so the bars will work for either one.

.

*Ahem*. Turn signals and a few other subtleties.

I don't know if the bars will interchange between the 1000 and 1100 either, but I don't get many opportunities to correct Steve.

I'm sorry..I don't understand:confused: What do signals have to do with engine case gaurds?? Am I missing something?

No, Trevor, you are not missing anything except Dogma's statement.

Let him revel in a rare opportunity.

Yes, I was a bit incomplete with my statement. Should have been:
"There were no changes from '80 to '81 that would prevent the use of one year's case guards on the other year."

Do you have a smiley for revelling?

Make sure you get the mounting hardware, too.

Be VERRRRRRRY careful mounting these to your bike -- on the bottom mounts, you have to watch the bolt lengths carefully or you'll punch a hole in your engine. No fun.

That is very true, didn't think about that part on the bottom bolt, but makes sense now that you state that.

Thank you.

My comments, though not expert are as follows: I had a 1980 gs 1000L.A guy in dallas had a 79.I sold him my guards for $20.They didnt fit, i gave him his money back.I ran into this problem when trying to make forward controls for members here. There is different fitment for many different years, so no way to make a generic set due to placement of mounting holes.

Ray..just cut off the tabs and make your own and weld them on. Drill a hole thru the brackets that is the same size as the OD of the guards piping and weld the new flanges on from underneath inside the hole. There may be a very little discoloration in the chrome right near the seams. Then just paint the flanges silver. Or if they are already rusty, just paint or powdercoat.

I am hoping they are still there, haven't been able to go back and grab them.
Damn building a shed getting in the way! and honey-do's.

30 bux is really cheap but you won't know how well they fit until you get them back and try them. I think you are supposed to use a U bolt to fit those to the frame. Does one side have two holes in it? I went through the same thing recently (gsx750 bars were supposed to fit my GSX 1100) then spent 2 days cutting and welding (I'm a really bad welder). Wikk get them rechromed when I fix up the rest of the bike. Maybe you can ask the guy if he will give you a refund if they don't fit?
