    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Engine with 41,000 miles

So the bike I picked up, a 78 GS1000 has 41,000 miles on it. Runs pretty well. Not exactly sure what the previous owner had done. He had someone install an electric ignition but I'm not sure what else they did. I'm guessing I should start with the valves to see if they need adjustment?

Any other recommendations? Should I just leave it as is? I'm thinking I should check the compression on the cylinders as well.
 
welcome to the site. I'd recommend going through the MegaWelcome BassCliff included in his post on your other thread, you'll find his "little" website VERY useful.

He has a checklist of probably neglected maintenance that would need to be addressed ASAp. You should start there, good luck!

41k is considered "just broken in" on these engines, as long as they've seen at least some semi-regular maintenance.

Yes, checking and adjusting the valves is very important. Compression test is optional unless you suspect a problem. (Although if you already have a tester, no reason you can't check it to satisfy any lingering curiosity.)

Many of us start with a full tear-down, cleaning, and rebuild of the carbs and go from there. Seal up the airbox and replace carb boots as necessary. Rebuild the brakes. These are just a few examples, there's a whole lot of maintenance to do catch up on and the whole shebang can be found in the Mega Welcome that you received from BassCliff in your other thread.

41,000? Might be 141,000. Doesn't really matter if the rest of the bike is good.
 
Valve adjustment is critical. I'd also torque the cylinder head. If it hasn't been torqued in some time the nuts will likely be stuck. Hit them with PB Blaster or similar and let them soak for a while. You need to back the nuts off about 1/8th of a turn before making them up to the specified torque (check your service manual).
 
My 79 GS1000 just rolled 41,xxxx and I have been wondering the same thing. The bike runs great. It looks like it's leaking a little oil around the head gasket. I am hoping I can get away with a new gasket and valve adjustment. It does seem to make alittle mechanical noise. But all the other GS's I have heard don't sound any different. I wear ear plugs 99% of the time so when i don't i swear i hear things

I am hoping to do a few track days at Mid Ohio next year. IF I can get the suspension swap done this winter.
