Okay guys here's my story...
I have an 82 550L that I finally got running, but not well. It starts up just fine with the choke fully engaged. Slowly turn the choke off after 5 minutes or so, and as the choke is fully disengaged, it starts to idle erratically. It will stay around 2k then drop to 1K and almost die, then back up to 3K and so forth. Sounds like an air leak right? well let me just give you a quick overview of what I have done so far.
Completely unganged and dipped the carbs via basscliffs tutorial. I verified all the passages clear and made damn sure I did it well because I didn't want to do it again. The floats are set to the repair manual standard via a digital caliper. All internal o-rings were changed as well. While I had the carbs off, I changed BOTH the carb to engine boots, and the carb to airbox boots. Also the boot o-rings have been changed as well. So I am pretty damn sure the carbs are clean, and I don't think I have any more airleaks unless they are coming from someplace atypical.
Lets see, I also did my best to bench sync the carbs when I had them off (haven't vacuum synced), and I have the air mixture screws set at 3 turns out. I think that is about all that I have done to the bike that would be relevant.
I am waiting on a set of feeler gauges in the mail so I can check my valves (the bike has 14.5k miles on it. No idea it's history). I also have not been able to check any electrical system yet (purchasing a multimeter soon).
So what would be causing that erratic idle? I am running out of money and need to be more selective of the parts I am purchasing until after Christmas. Everything on the bike is stock by the way other than the parts I have replaced. Thank you for your time.
