A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Exceptionally poor MPG

Okay

Let's start with carbs
When you say you rebuilt them, did you follow the tutorial here? New O rings? Carb rebuild kits?

Ignition
You need both sets of points, both. Condensors that are properly gapped and timed with a timi g light

These bikes are pretty simple. Go to Bass cliffs site, download the factory service manual and read the tutorials

Steve, some days I use my $60 tablet and that's the best I can do

How do you use your $60 tablet to gap and time the condensors? :-k

Sorry, but the logic in your reply eludes me.

.

Steve, you need to back off on the extra cups of coffee. Posting mistakes can happen and it's no reason to be unnecessarily rude. Big T obviously meant to say, buy new points and condensers and THEN re-gap and reset the timing. Or at least I was brilliant enough to understand that.;)

I didn't see any mention of the carb boots or air filter boots being checked or replaced.

I also don't know what is meant by "rebuilt the air box." But you do want to make sure it is properly sealed along with the boot connections.

I strongly suspect that your non oem exhaust is involved in your problem. In my experience stock jetting and stock air box do not play well with after market exhausts, particularly on the 8 valves. if you could find a stock exhaust (good luck) and take everything back to baseline, I would do that. Otherwise search here for the recommended jetting for the exhaust you have and possibly consider pods if they are recommended. Expect a fair amount of trial and error and tweaking. Just about any change you make to the stock setup will reduce your gas mileage somewhat.

I Agree with Steve, "IT'S TIME FOR A COMPLETE STRIP AND DIP REBUILD" I have been there on all sides of the rebuild theories and I know that only one way works with VM carburetors, at least a 24 hour soak in carburetor dip completely disassembled, new O-rings, floats adjusted and fuel levels checked, and most likely new boots and O-rings to the head. In your case the air box needs to be properly sealed also. I am running 4-1 pipes and pods, a stage 3 jet kit and regularly get 44 MPG on a GS1000E. There are extremely tiny passages in these carburetors, and 30+ years of hardened crud can not be cleaned with carburetor cleaner in a spray can even if you see some spraying through the passages. Spray carb cleaner is a final step along with compressed air. Then the adjustment process begins.
