A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I just bought an '81 GS850GL and it needs a new exhaust. I found a 4-2 and a 4-1 but it says for models thru 1980. I am under the impression that it would fit on an '81 but I'm not sure. And, which one will provide a better sound and better performance. This is my first bike by the way and am looking forward to working on it this winter and riding in the spring. Also happy to join this site and learn some stuff. Thanks.

Hi Mr. firstGSrider,

The '80 and '81 GS850G models were basically the same, very little difference. What exhausts did you find? Stock? Aftermarket? Vance and Hines?

Anyway, let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS850G lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Welll I was looking at a MAC 4-1 megaphone aftermarket rig. I did look at vance and hines their 4-2 was more expensive. I'm looking to get a fairly cheap exhaust that will sound good. The MAC megaphone was 315 shipped.

Hi,

If the headers fit the 1980 then they should fit the 1981. About the only wrinkle that might pop up would be the mounting for the muffler part. Most people here don't seem to have any trouble fabricating/welding some kind of little mounting hardware when necessary. A muffler shop could probably help you out if you don't have the tools.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
