I want something that sounds loud and low for my 1000 GL. Since I am basically doing a whole resto project on it. What do you think I should get for my exhaust. I want a really loud, deep, and powerful idling sound. I just want to know what some of the folks here have had experience with,(good or bad) and I also will like some recommendations. The Vance and Hines GS1000 Megaphone 4-1 Exhaust System is cheap, but is a 4 -1, and I don't think it will give me the sound I want. If someone has had any experience with this type of exhaust please share.

Thanks in advance.:D

You want it loud? :-k

This place is the wrong place to ask.

We have a couple guys here that like them loud, but most of us prefer "stealth" mode. :D

Have you had any experience with the Vance and Hines Steve? in your opinion what should I go with? It doesn't really have to be loud :o. Just a nice deep sound would probably be the right way to describe it :p

They sound great, unless some ass hole takes the baffle out.

V&H pipes for the GS do not have a deep sound. They sound like the typical 4:1, inline-4 cylinder engine sound.

Ok so the right question is. In your opinion what is the best exhaust out there for our bikes, or what exhaust do you use in your bikes?

Three of the five GSes here have stock pipes. Generally considered by many to be "the best".

One has what we believe to be a Jardine, it sounds great. The baffle is a little different than most, might be why I like its sound a bit better.
When my son gets his videos edited from Brown County this past weekend, you will be able to hear some of it for yourself.

One has what we believe to be a MAC, it sounds OK.

If you remove the baffle out of either of the headers, it sounds like a MUCH bigger bike at idle, then just gets louder and more obnoxious as you add more throttle.

Woah :( Didn't mean to offend anyone. Just a question:confused:

Felix, don't worry about offending, Tom is our resident grumpy old man and especially when it comes to noise

No exhaust system is going to make an inline 4 give a deep rumble. It's the wrong type of motor. If having that sound is your priority, time to buy a V twin of some sort

Tom's not the only one that's grumpy about excessive noisy motorcycles. In my view loud bikes are a selfish expression and irresponsible. I've started placing members here running open pipes on their bikes on my forum "ignore list".

Deep sound, not loud I also get bothered by really loud motorcycles

I don't recommend it for those that want a "pretty" bike but, here is an example of how good these bikes CAN sound.
About twenty years ago, I had a Yoshi header with no exhaust from the collector back.
So, I bought a $20 automotive 2.25" straight-through glass-pack muffler and made a 3" mid-pipe to it.
As you can see with the cardboard tube, it has NO restriction whatsoever.
(Which DOES NOT HURT the bottom end torque at all, BTW.)
After-market .392/.392 camshafts. :twistedevil:
Upon deceleration, it has a sweet, deep baritone sound that resembles that of a Ferrari.
It DOES NOT weigh a ton (Less than a stock system) and is easy to remove the entire welded system with 9 bolts to change the oil. ;)

The entire system cost me a whole $100.00.

THAT is a nice sounding bike. Sorry prudes... a little sportiness and a growl sounds better than some of the shreiking, ratty, coffee can sounding MAC systems out there.

I agree. When I got my bike, it had the V-H 4-1 on it. Pulled that off and put on stock pipes. Very little difference in sound.

Even the V-H Sidewinder doesn't really give a deep rumble. Won't get that from an inline 4 at all.

Wanna sound like a V-Twin, get a V-Twin.
