If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi there,

I just bought a right side muffler/header for my 81 GS650E from ebay.
It was from an 81 GS650L but from the pics looked exactly the same and i figured that its the same engine so why not? Maybe I should o'posted on here first...

Anyway it showed up this morning and its in great condition but the stamp on the muffler clearly has an "L" on it and now I'm a little concerned that it wont fit...

Can anyone offer some insight before I take it to the shop and ask them to try installing it? i havent had the chance to compare the two yet, its pouring down outside and i'm at work all day... I'm just looking for a heads up.

thanks :)

hmmmm not sure on the 650 but I do know with the 1000 the G has a wider frame and there are clearance issues.

just checked and part numbers are differant, it doesnt mean it wont fit though.

WTF is your GS doing in a shop? Are you allowing other people to actually put their filthy hands on your GS?

That just simply isn't done, you know... [-X

Anyway, I don't know if the exhaust you have will work, but it won't take long to find out.

um... aaah... its not yet :?

i guess i'll take a look in the manual and dig through my metric wrench set first. i think at worst, a little welding would make it fit, as there's actually nothing wrong with my headers.

i'll let you know

Welcome to the forum, iD.

Don't mind Bwringer's reaction - he's one of the friendliest, most helpful people you'll ever deal with. It's just sort of a surprise to encounter anyone in these parts who takes their bikes to the shop. Many shops refuse to handle bikes as old as GSes, and often the kids who work for them don't know how to work on older machines. There probably isn't anything that a GS needs for which there isn't genuine expert advice in this forum.

To find if your exhaust is the same as that on a GS, go to the web sites for Alpha Sports or Bike Bandit, and start looking up parts. Both sites have on-line exploded diagrams with part numbers for essentially every year of every model of bike. It the parts numbers are the same, the parts are the same. But sometimes non-identical numbers can be made to fit.

so after an extensive visual check (well as extensive as a visual check can be, sans tools) it looks like it'll match without problem... its the same length, it has the same angles (vertically anyhow, hard to determine lateral angles) and the bolts all appear to be in the same place.

once it's fitted... and it will be, one way or another... i'll post some before and after shots see if anyone can tell :)

thanks for the input fellas, always appreciated.
D!

oh Bwinger, i remembered about a friend studying to be a bike mechanic, working part time at a small shop... we're gonna go in on his day off and have a crack at it together \\:D/

Lots of horror stories about header bolts snapping off in the head around here. You might want to hit these screws with PB Blaster or similar a couple times a day for a couple of days before trying to remove the screws. Couldn't hurt.

thanks for the tip, i'll pick some up... aw man, i'm getting excited :)
