A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Anyone know if a 1979 gs850 exhaust port is the same dimensions as a 1981 gs850 ?
I am trying to connect a pair of Mac brand 4 into 2 off a 1981 gs850 , but the header end of pipe seems too long and not wide enough . The dimensions of top end of pipe are 43mm OD X 26mm length . The port on the 1979 seems to be 47mm wide and 17mm deep . Am I missing something ?

Not sure what you mean by too long. Does the tube not slip in the head far enough to catch the bolts?
Check the head to see if the old crush gaskets are stuck in there. They have a tendency to hide themselves, especially if the old exhaust leaked and covered them in carbon.

Here is a pic of the port that might help with your diagnosis . Thanks !ex1.jpg

The tube slips in to head ok , but loose and wont go in all the way to tightening flange . Bolts connect and tighten down about half way then the big gap . Thanks .

If your referring to the space between the header flange and the head, that's normal on an aftermarket header. It looks fine to me. Just be careful tightening the bolts. Personally, I use anti sieze on the bolts to ease future removal.

Thanks Dorkburger , Would you say by my pics that the gaskets crushed and stuck in the head port ?

I can't tell for sure, as my bike's ports are a bit different. The gaskets are some sort of soft metal and crush by design when the header it tightened down, so there is a chance they are in there if nothing fell out when removing the old exhaust.

Thanks boys for the advice ! What's the best approach to yank them out ?

A thin blade screwdriver should pry them out.
Princess Auto/Harbour Freight sell a pack of dental picks for about $5.00.
I have used them many times for many things, just like this.

Thanks to y'all for the help ! This truly is a great website and forum !

Thanks Buffalo ! I'll try to keep them if possible , after all I am a cheap Scotsman !
