    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Alright, long story short-I got a 1979 GS850 for free...yes free. (I went to a garage sale and the guy said I could just take it, so needless to say, I did). It is currently in the process of becoming a running bike again (after new rings and gaskets), and now needs a new exhaust. My question is this-is there a way to get a newer style sportbike exhaust on this great old bike? I am sort of giving the bike a style update-starting with the exhaust. The look I am going for can be seen here-
www.redneckcycles.co.uk-then click on street fighters on the left, then on the GS850. Looking at the pictures they have, it seems the only way is to get a header built for the bike and weld on a newer style muffler section. Any help would be appreciated-thanks.
 
I don't know the answer, but I like what you're aiming for! :D

Well, I thought maybe I could get a nice header that was built for the bike, the grab one of the half exhaust systems from Yoshimura or something and weld it on...
 
Thats the same thing I was thinking when I bought my MAC exhaust.
Sadly, the Mac header is 2.5 inches where it would connect to any mid-pipe or muffler can.

The only choice is to have a mid-pipe MADE that will fit the huge mac header outlet and the smaller modern muffler inlet.

Fkn sucks...

That's a V&H header with a modern D&D pipe. The midpipe is a single bend, looks real simple. I think the V&H header has a 2" output, so it would be easy to configure with a modern slip-on can.

Also, I think the V&H exhaust exactly like that 850 has is available. One of the New England GS guys, Pano, just put a nice modern V&H on.
 
Just as a side note-nobody has ever seen another seat like the one in the first pic from Redneck Cycles have they? I'm trying to figure a way to create something like it, but it would be nice if something similar is already available.
 
Okay, seems like that is a good answer-just get a header with a two inch or so output to fit the bik, fab up a midpipe and bolt on a newer can. Any other thoughts are welcome.

That's exactly whats going to have to be done. (Vance and Hines Header)
OR
Get a mid-pipe "expanded" to fit over the 2.5 inch MAC header.
(I may take this route if I can get a good deal on a can and mid-pipe together)

Oh yeah, that seat and rear subframe are one-off pieces made
by the former Redneck cycles of the UK. :(
 
That's what I figured about the seat, oh well....it sure does look good though.
 
I didn't bend or stretch anything to get this R1 to fit the headers I have. Don't know what brand they are, doesn't mater. AutoZone has adapters to make anypipe, midpipe marry your header. Two reducers, less that $4.00, instant exhaust system.

Thanks for the info--just another side note....is there a way to change the bodywork/tank on my 79 so it is a little more modern and sporty like the ones pictured above?
