    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey guys and gals, I was just wondering if anyone has fitted any different or newer-style fenders to their GS. The front fender on my '81 750L has a rust hole in the back and I was hoping to replace it with something more modern looking like something off of an SV650 or the like. Has anyone done this? Also, I was considering either chopping or removing my rear fender, but wanted to retain the light housing and plate bracket. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? Thanks in advance.
 
Every SV I've ever seen has had the rear fender removed. Having a hard time envisioning the look you are after.
 
I have done several fenderectomies over the years. Not hard.

For the front, you will have more luck getting an easier fit with a plastic fender from the 80's or 90s. Yamaha made some pretty ones that have similar bolt spacing. If putting on a plastic one be sure to get the pressed steel inner u shaped brace to tie the forks together. You are replacing a rigid steel fender after all.

As far as the rear goes. I wouldn't totally remove it but if you do I'd replace a portion of it ( the part under the seat at least) with something to help keep water out. On my XS "convertible"m tracker I adapted a plastic trailer fender for this purpose ( check Harbour Freight or the like).

You will also need to fabricate a bracket to hold the plate and tail light and you could mound this to the frame rails or maybe even the rear of the seat itself. As the Tail light is going to look a bit large I'd think you'd want to find something smaller perhaps.

As Ed. says it all depends on the look you are going for so perhaps you can post a pic of your bike to explain a bit more.

I just modified both of my fenders. I shortened the front by 5 inches (3" off the upper, 2" off the lower) but maintained the gnurled lip by cutting sections out of the inner of the fender and welding back together. Mabye this could work in cutting out that rust hole that you are talking about.

With the rear fender, I did the same, but removed about 6 inches from the middle section, while still retaining the brake mounting holes, and fender mounts. This does reshape the rear fender, and the existing bracket will no longer work...I plan on putting a single bee-hive style brake light to accomodate.

I can post some pics, mabye tomorrow morning to clarifiy, and to see if the looks will work for you.....I like it, though I haven't assembled the bike back together yet.

Do you happen to remember any model numbers of the Yamaha plastic fenders that bolt up? If I could find some plastics to beat up, that would be ideal.
