    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi all,

I've finally got my 850 up and running, and I took it out for a spin tonight.
it runs pretty well, and pulls nicely, without much effort (didnt go too hard on the first run)

there are 2 main issues right now:

1:
It starts right up now, and has no problem idling, but i hear some weird rattling-like noise , which im thinking might be the cam chain tensioner, and it generally is noisier than it was last year. although it could also be the tach cable where it sits on the engine, as i lost a little screw and plate, so its not fastened 100% (replaced the seal and cable recently), and it drips oil a wee bit. :roll:

2: Concerning transmission, it is really hard to switch gears sometimes, and other times it is just fine. switches pefectly when bike is off.


Ive just gotta get my carbs synched up, and order a new valve cover gasket (and recheck my valve clearances when putting it on).


I'm just not sure on the sources of the engine noises im hearing. probably gonna take it to a mech. on monday, to get an opinion and a proper synch job.
 
A good way of finding the source of noise,use a length of hose ,use it like a stethoscope.
 
the hard shifting problem started to be more noticeable last season, after i had my rear end off, and changed the transmission + final drive oil.

splines are all nicely lubed up with moly, and the shifting problem doesnt seem to exist as much if im shifting at quicker intervals (booting it)

definitely have to adjust the clutch cable, but would this be the solution? I'll have to wait an see i guess. :?
 
If your cam chain tensioner is OK, a good spot-on carb synch will remove much of the remaining cam chain noise because the power pulses will be much more even.

So keep going -- don't let it go much further without that synch!

Check those valve clearances first, though.

My 850's valve cover is wearing a silicone Realgasket, and it's the cat's patoot. Not even a hint of any oil mist has escaped, and the reddish-orange color looks really cool, too. Only $25, and it's the last valve cover gasket I'll ever need to buy. I would highly suggest getting one if you don't have one already.

Adjusting the clutch cable is about the easiest way to go.

You need about 1/8 of an inch free play on the clutch lever.
 
well, got my carbs synch'd up, and rattle is still there.

its my cam-chain tensioner.
