Well decided since the bike was down for a week waiting on intake boots, I decided to rewire the fuse box.
2010-10-22%2019.00.13.jpg

Soldered and shrink wraped all the connectors. New cables for the starter, positive feed to the solenoid and all new ground wires. Soldered the stator wires straight to the R/R.

Duaneage's Honda R/R next to a OEM R/R. (correction: it seems this one is not OEM rather another Honda R/R)

Added a Fuse to the charging connector. Added a dedicated circuit to the constant hot for the fairing.

With the key on there is a voltage drop of 0.0002 between the battery positive and the fuse box feed.:D

I'd be tracking that down pretty soon there, sir. :p

Nice work.

Now you get to go out and enjoy those cooler mornings with your 'new' fairing. :D

.

Boots come in Monday, only bad thing about these bikes is waiting on OEM parts.

guess I have been spoiled dealing with cars and trucks, I can get almost any part next day lol

Nice work :)

Try having to get some bits from overseas... weeks unless you pay a fortune... you guys in the US are lucky

Pomade Vendor: I can get the part from Bristol. It'll take two weeks, here's your pomade.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Two weeks? That don't do me no good.
Pomade Vendor: Nearest Ford auto man's Bristol.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Hold on, I don't want this pomade. I want Dapper Dan.
Pomade Vendor: I don't carry Dapper Dan, I carry Fop.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Well, I don't want Fop, dang it! I'm a Dapper Dan man!
Pomade Vendor: Watch your language, young feller, this is a public market. Now if you want Dapper Dan, I can order it for you, have it in a couple of weeks.
Ulysses Everett McGill: Well, ain't this place a geographical oddity. Two weeks from everywhere!

Are you sure that was an OEM R/R you replaced? That looks like another Honda R/R to me. My OEM R/R was tiny by comparison... Methinks the P.O. of your bike may have already put a Honda R/R on your bike.

Nice work on the electrical upgrades, though!

Regards,

That r/r looks just like my OEM r/r ( still working)- I think Nippon-Denso farmed them out to Shendengen . I'm suspicious of those tiny ones for lack of heatsink size.

The only stock Suzuki R/R's I've ever seen were the "tiny" ones, and since the OEM unit on my big 1100 was one of those (same with my little 550L) I was suspicious. I'm not surprised your big OEM unit is still working, since it probably IS functionally similar to the Shendengen (Honda) units many of us are retrofitting on to our GS's.

I bought an ebay r/r ( came down with other goodies ) for same year as my bike and it was identical- same part number. But it had bad diode set ( let's not discuss this further). Two others I got were tiny ones with unique wiring- I didn't even bother to test.

Thanks Steves :D You know I was wondering why both were of equall size. I just looked the fiche up for mine and the OEM one is teeny tiny:eek:. Why in god's name would they both a R/R that small and expect it to sink the charge current?

Glad someone upgraded mine a while back.

I wonder if besides the corrosion problem, if the small heat sink in the R/R causes the unit to not be able to sink the excess current causing the stator to try and sink it, burning it up.

Just read the price on a OEM R/R, 202.00 wow you could get a top of the line series R/R for that

Nevermind that the OEM unit isn't as good as the "Honda/Shindengen" alternatives that you can get off Ebay or through Duanage for less than $50...

Regards,

I've handled several Suzuki Nippon Denso RRs with shorted diodes, three parts bikes I bought had bad RRs. I saw one short so bad it popped the main fuse as soon as the bike started. Those things are like time bombs.

An inferior part on a superior motorcycle.

The project 1100GK I have in my garage does exactly that, Duane, and when I unplugged the R/R the bike ran just fine off the battery. I haven't dug into the charging system yet (stator papers), but figured it was either a bad stator or bad R/R. No surprise...

Regards,

When I finished TheBigRed's bike, we started it and it melted the main fuse instantly. Shorted RR. Weird thing is the bike ran when he tore it apart 5 years before. Fortunately he was in the best garage in the world for RR replacement, I think we did it in about 20 minutes.

I unhooked the red lead and when the AC hit the RR from the stator, there was a dead short between the red and the ground lead I measured with a voltmeter checking for voltage drop across a 47 ohm resistor. And that boy got hot quick, burnt my fingers.

If I get another GS, the OEM RR is coming off before it enters the garage.
