My dad had just bought a 1982 Kawasaki KZ1000 in the summer of 08. He needed to do the driving test to get his motorcycle liscence and he discovered he couldn't use the bike he had just bought because it didn't have front blinkers. So, he had to use his friend mike's motorcycle. when we arrived at mike's garage, we realized that the bike was kind of a piece of crap. The seat was covered in duct tape, the tank had a big spot where the clear coat got worn off over the years, the bike randomly bogged out and the way to make it stop was to tap the back break and it would reset something electrical when the brake light came on, the engine was filthy when the petcock leaked and the motor heated up and burnt the gas in, and only the high beam worked in the head light. I came with when we picked up the bike so i had to ride on the back. When me and my dad came home, i stayed outside when my dad went in the house. I looked at the bike for a bit, (then i had no experience with motorcycles at all and i wasn't very intersted in them either.) I sat on the bike and instantly fell in love. I was so inexperienced that i forgot to put the kick stand back down when i got off. luckily, my friend corey was there to help me keep it from falling. I wanted to drive it very badly but my dad said no because it wasn't his bike. When we went to go drop off the bike after my dad took the test (with a different bike then the one he borrowed because the horn didn't work) i begged mike to sell the bike to me. After a bit, my dad finally talked mike into selling the bike to me for 350.00$.
At first, my dad was against me buying it. He said "you can get something better for just a little more money on craig's list." but i still wanted it.
I did research on the bike and found out it was a 1982 Suzuki GS300L.
I saved up cash for 3 months and finally, i had 350 bucks. My dad gradually warmed up to the idea because we could make it cherry and sell it for more than we bought it for. I bought it in Febuary of 09. I didn't even know if i could get a permit to ride with my dad yet, i just had the bike. My mom took the seat to a reupolstery shop and got the seat redone for 80 bucks
she said i didn't have to pay her back so that was really cool. My uncle chad got the tank repainted. Me and my dad diagnosed the bogging and found out it was a bad connection behind the headlight and mike had already bought a new rectifier which was used and malfunctioning. so we got the old rectifier and reinstalled in and it ran great. i cleaned up the motor with carb cleaner and it looks pretty good too. the bike had ran great ever since until about a week ago when i put new blinkers on it because the old ones were broke in weird places because one of the previous owners had dropped it.
I messed up a connection somewhere in the harness behind the headlight and the bike started to bogg again. When the bike would idle really low and boggy i would turn on the blinkers and it would run right for a second every time the blinker flashed. Me and my dad rewired my whole bike With a wiring harness off of another 1982 GS300L D model parts bike that i bought in May and it still ran boggy. I ended up disconnecting the rectifier and the bike ran great.
So i ordered a new rectifier about 2 days ago. I am looking forward to getting back on my bike. I love that bike and i'd hate to see it go.
The parts bike that i got the wireing harness off of is currently being restored because i saw that it had some potential and is going to be woken up from an 18 Year slumber hopefully in this winter. I somehow found an unfindable ignition unit on ebay one day and i found a valve cover from a member of The GSResources. The bike is coming along nicely and i cant wait to take it for a spin. Before these two bikes, i hadn't the slightest idea on how to work on a motorcycle. These bikes made me Totally prepaired to work on any other bike. Im only 14 and i am looking forward to a good life of riding. These bike were a very great influence on my life.
