A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Fix those air leaks...

Took out my (sadly) seldom ridden S over the Christmas holiday for a longer jaunt and at steady freeway cruising (80 mph) the oil temp was cresting 300 F after about 20 min. Upon slowing down noticed the idle was hanging indicating an airleak. The bike has seen a good many shorter rides but the symptoms didn't show up then.

The carb boot pipes and O-rings are new, but the airbox side boots were hard and shrunk up a little so the decision was made to replace them.

Took the bike out yesterday for a longer ride (post repair) and the hanging idle is gone. Also, the temp gauge hovered in the 250 F range. Still hot, but 50 F lower than before.

Going to pull the plugs and check color next, but the bike runs flawlessly so I don't expect to see much. Actually, the bike ran fine at freeway speeds even with the airleak, only it was obviously running lean. Guess that goes to show, don't judge your mixture by how well the bike runs. For you guys running pods or a modified exhaust, better double check your mixture otherwise you could be cooking your engine needlessly. And for guys with a stock intake system, airbox leaks are almost as bad as intake boot pipe leaks.

Gotta pay attention to details.

CV model no doubt?
I've often thought of acquiring a set of outlet hoses (air box boots) for my
'79 GS1000E but there's no part number for it, I don't think my boots are leaking but they're probably as hard as nails. Thought about replacing them as to make it easier to reinstall the air box when and if I do.

I think you are correct. They don't make the airbox boots for the VM type carbs. They certainly don't for the 550s anyway. I imagine the situation is the same for the larger motors up to '79 as well.

When I did my intake system up I replaced all 8 boots, engine side and airbox side and have had no trouble since, the bike runs perfectly. I still check the colour of the plugs occasionally as per Ed's advice.

Suzuki saw fit to sell them separately for the '79 and earlier 750 and 850 but not the 550 nor 1000 for some reason. They're still available new as well. Somebody on here was going to do some measuring with new 750 hoses and see if they would fit a 1000 but I don't think he ever got back.

I don't see them listed in the parts fische for either the '79 GS850G or '77-79 GS750E. The GS750 does show a part number but it's identified as a "drain hose" which it isn't.
Either the item listing is wrong, or item number and part number. Item 10 in the fische.

Same thing applies to the '79 GS850G, listed as drain hose. Item 10

The part number is right, the description isn't I reckon. A few other sites I have just checked lists as 4 needed so that can't be the (single) drain hose. Plus the price looks about right. Strangely Robinsons lists it as an 'outlet hose'.

Dang noobs like Ed... try to tell them to check everything. They never do... :D

Hey Dave,
