    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

fog lights anyone?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone has installed fog lights on thier gs?

I have a gs80gl and I have replaced the stator, and regulator.

I was thinking of hooking the lights directly to the battery....will that do any damage?

I am thinking of light that are maybe 55 watts each?

I've read on here....

that the charging/electric systems on the GSes are pretty darn near matched to the load on the bike. Putting on anything that adds to the load may likely cause your battery to slowly drain flat as you ride. Even heard it said about electric gloves and what not. If I were to do something, I think I'd go with LEDs given their relatively low power consumption for the wattage....

If you do it and it works do post it so we know more....
 
if you want to add a lot of light, (i've been thinking this one over for a while) then I'm thinking yourn probably going to have to ditch the stock head light and replace it with LEDs, or get an added power supply. Like JBS I've also heard that these bikes don't have a lot of extra battery power, so you have to be careful adding additional eletronics.

I've been thinking of adding additional head lights and tail light, as well as may be a couple of running lights. I'm a little bit paranoid about cagers not seeing me (i'm sure many here share my fear). mostly what i haved looked into are bicycle lights (I have some background there). There are some pretty powerful units with external power supplies that you can get. they come with mounting brackets, power pack, charger and lights. These units are aften designed to be headlights for a cyclist, so they should serve well for fog lights (good spread). The batteries can last anywhere from 3 to 50 hours, depending on the unit, and most are easily rechargeable.

I was just thinking i had to comeon here and ask the same question. I know that even running the bike without the head light on is then to much power. can't win hu. if you do go too LED's all around check to see hjow much power your saving. let use know how it works out.
 
I have a set of driving lights on my 82 850. It does run the battery down. I put a volt guage on this spring and when I turn the extra lights on you can watch the voltage drop slowly. I have my lights set up to come on when the high beams are on. The voltage never went below 12.4 and bounces right back when I turn them off. I'm thinking about going with LED on the rest of the lights and see how much of a difference it makes.
 
is 12.4 bad?

what were some of these bike lights? do you have any model numbers?
 
as far as bike lights go, there are a hand full of producers out there, but products don't vary too much from each other.

Up here in Ontario, I go to Mountain Equipment Co-op... any outdoor shop or cycle shop should be able to point you in the right direction..

For an example though, you may look into something like these:

together, they put out about 30Watts, and have 2 power settings, so you could use them on low power as running lights.

Another big plus about these systems is that they are water tight, and can take the heavy vibration. Also, most have a seperate wired switch, so you can mount it somewhere that is easy to reach.

Check out Nite Hawk, Planet Bike, and Princeton Tec.

I was personally thinking of buying the simpler, 5LED handle bar units and then splicing in my own swtich. little bit cheaper that way.
 
These guys make a top quality product. I took a look at them at a local distributor. Very expensive! I backed off because of the price. I feared what everyone else does. That my charging system can't handle the extra load.

Hi i put a pair of 55watt spot lights on my 80 gsx 750et and wired a relay to each light and had no problems at all the bat kept charged and seemed ok.

RETRO how exactly did you set up the relay?
