DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I thought that while I had my 650G apart I'd install a fork brace. Honestly, it would be as much for bling value as handling.

I found one at oldbikebarn (yes, I'll be careful), but it's $50.

Isn't it just a piece of metal machine to fit between the fork tubes?

Couldn't I have a local machine shop make one for a lot less than $50?

Is there something I don't understand here?

Thanks,
Del

Re: fork brace ??

With machine shop rates, they probably wouldnt bother to set up the machine for $50 as that amount of money would likely cover about 15 minutes of their time. :-)

Yes and no. It is simply a piece of metal that fits between the forks, but it is an ACCURATELY machined piece of metal that MUST be on the same hole centres as the triples and axle spacers or it will cause binding and stiction problems. A brace that does not fit properly is significantly worse than no brace at all.

No. Earl is correct in his assessment. I am not sure what type of brace you are thinking of (either the split plate type or the Telefix type), but the simplest one would be minimum 3-4 hours of time at about $55-$60/hr or more, depending on the shop and their equipment. To make it look nice would take significantly more time than that and would cost accordingly.

To me $50 sounds very reasonable if it is a decent piece of work.

You might want to check on ebay you should be able to pick one up for a little cheaper. I have seen them for under 35 and are aluminum.
