If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I just changed the oil and filter on my '84 GS1150EF (FRAM filter #CH6001) and I was getting a lot of leakage from around the filter cover. I removed the cover to see if I'd pinched the o-ring or something (after removing the oil first!) and found that the replacement O-ring that came with the filter, while being exactly the right shape and size, was too skinny to make a proper seal. Fortunately I still had the old one, so I replaced it.

Has anybody else encountered this?

Yeah, I gave up messing with those skinny "o" rings and now just go to the local Suzi dealer and have them order a half dozen OEM "O" rings at a time for my workshop stock. :-)

On my 10002V motor using Fram's never had a problem.

I put a dab of oil on my finger and run it over the gasket and it sits fine.

I also try to warm up the gasket to make it more pliable.

I remember reading about a recall of a batch of Frams with too-skinny o-rings a while back. Something about the ones made in the Phillipines.

Anyway, I often use Frams (made in Korea, as it happens) from the local Advance auto parts shoppe just because they're cheap and easy to find. As often as I change my oil (about every 2K miles), I'm not too worried about the well-known crappy quality of Frams, but I do take out the o-ring and make sure it looks OK before I buy it. No leaks so far.

Pep Boys sometimes has Purolator filters, too.

The tip about ordering a whole bunch of OEMs from the dealer is a good idea if you don't mind the extra bit of expense. Emgo filters available at many motorcycle shops are also well thought of and reasonably inexpensive.

I keep the oem ones in stock also. Boy what a drag those fram o rings are I even have had therm be just too small or just to big((not the thickness)). They must be being made in The new Iraq industrial machine 8O

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade here but I used to use Fram filters quite often until I started finding out from several sources that Fram is the perfect example of how not to make an oil filter. I'd prefer to spend a couple extra buck and buy OEM and not worry about anything.

Agreed. Sounds like their build quality is as bad with bike filters as it is for automotive stuff.

I believe that is true of their automotive filters, but the bike filters are built different. If you look at your NAPA Gold filter for my GS550E (85) you will find it is a reboxed Fram. I had another brand a while ago that was also a Fram.

The problem with the Fram automotive filters was the endcaps went from steel to cardboard, and the bypass was a deforming piece of tin with a rubber seal instead of a spring bypass (the spring resets itself, whereas the Fram bypasses forever once it does its initial deformation).

For auto filters, I stick with WIX/NAPA Gold.

I never ran the Fram filters on my GS so I can't say what the end caps are made of but the external screw on filters like my Bandit uses did have cardboard endcaps in them.
