Looks like the state of Virginia may end up winning the title war I am currently having with them. I foolishly bought the 450 without a title, honestly believing we could get one for it. I have access to a 750 frame with a clear title. Will the frame for the 750 be to wide to fit all my 450 running gear? Is there a difference in the frame sizes? Thanks in advance for any help provided!

Huge difference in frames.

Not a feasible alternative to swap running gear

Sell it someone in a state that doesn't require titles and buy it back

Don't know the answer to your question but it may be possible to cut the VIN out of the 750 frame and weld it in place of the 450 VIN #.... A little fab, blending and paint and the schmoes down at the DMV would never know the difference:evil:.

Exactly what was done (shall remain nameless) to a bike I painted 2 years ago. One bike was legit and the other was also but with a title gone missing, decades ago...end of story. :-\\\ ;)

Swapping necks is simple enough to do and may save you a great deal of effort with DMV. Another in a long list of reason I left the Great Commonwealth. There a few really good builders depending on the area youre in. Not knowing where youre located, I cant really offer any names for where you are. But if youre anywhere near Alexandria, R&R cycle is a good place to start.

I love these old bike and I hate it every time one gets parted out. Too many meet this fate because of title problems. I have a 77 GS750 with $400 worth of back fees from the bike not being non oped.

We all need to do the right thing to these bikes to preserve them. Never let the registration go unattended. If the frame is destroyed from a crash and you have the title cut the steering head off and save both.

I have no problem with splicing in a new VIN as 99% the time this has nothing to do with a 30 year old stolen bike. There are only a few choice's in a new ujm today so lets keep these bike around. Dan

You can also find a friend in South Carolina. Here a bill of sale is as good as long as the VIN doesnt ring any bell when a search is done. Then when a new title has been issued, buy it back for the cost of the DMV work and maybe something for that persons time.

Are you volunteering? If so I can use some help with an 81 gs750l.
BTW did you change the forks on your 80 gs750lx I thought all L's had forks with the tires mounted in front of the forks not the bottom like yours.

Have you tried going through a title company?

I've investigated this avenue and the cost of getting it done this way is about 3 times what I have invested in the bike alreaady. What gets me about the great crappy state of Virginia is that they have forms and processes in place to facilitate this evolution but nobody that works for DMV seems to understand the "correct" method. I've talked to four different individuals and they have all given me different instructions for getting this done.

Thanks for the info on the frame differences. I have certainly considered purchasing the 750 frame, and swapping VINs. But I can see DMV running me down for a stay at the straight bar hotel......

I think I may investigate this idea. Wonder if they have any out of state titling options for folks in the military.....

Yeah Im running the forks off the 1982 on the 1980. It kept the trail within tolerances. If you need someone to get it titled, I could offer my time. You wouldnt need anyone with a bike, just one with a good VIN.

If you're in the military you should be able to title in your home state or the state of your duty station. On the home state option, I'm not entirely sure you can do that unless the vehicle was titled there to begin with.

I'm glad maine doesn't make a point of focing you to have a title. Anything over umm... 15 years I think it is, doesn't require a title. I was thinking about trying to procure one for my bike though. It would be nice to be able to say that I have the title even though don't need it.

My home state requires a title for any vehicle 1981 or later, no ifs, ands or buts. I'm currently stationed in Virginia, where the title war is raging.

try calling the main office in your state. I'm fighting the same war on the western front. I've never had so much trouble registering an old pile of junk in my life. Went down and paid the back fees for it being out of date supplied them with a bill of sale and was told it had to be reviewed. Review board sent me a letter telling me I needed to contact the original owner and have them sign a release of liability then have them fill out a bill of sale to the guy I got it from. In order to contact them I needed to send a certified letter and wait for a reply. If I recieved no reply I was to send the returned letter unopened or a reciept for the letter to the DMV. Now they will not repeat will not give me the last known address of the orig owner, so I'm screwed. Then I need to obtain a bond for the value of the bike and get a new vin plate from chp. Thought I was done and sunk at this point. Called the main office and was told all but the vin plate was unnecessary. Seems even the review board don't know their job either. All the bond and other hoopla apply to vehicles over two grand in value. She even called me back five minutes laternto have me fax the letter to her so she could sort it out for me. I guess what I'm saying is to cut out the middle man and go to the source. If the main office won't help I'd get with hammered and see if you could sell it to him and buy it back with a title.
