    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

For those who don't know by now, I got this bike last may/June. Being in Florida - I tend to ride alot. I commute 50 miles/day to work and back.

Needless to say, I've changed my oil a bunch of times.
The local Auto parts store has the Fram in stock. I recently read where Fram is JUNK. I've not had any trouble.

However:

About 2 oil changes ago, I couldn't get the filter to "Snap" on the boss in the oil filter reservoir. I used it anyway (Stupid - I know).

Well, next oil change was ok. Filter pressed on firmly, all was perfect.

Guess what, tonight - again - wouldn't snap on. YES - BOTH FILTERS ARE CH6000!!!
I started looking and the center rubber gasket is way different diameters. So, being the genius I am, think "I'll switch the center gasket!". NOT. Even the hole thru the sheet metal housing is different.
So, I go back to the store and the 3 they have on the shelf are all the same. The young kid is looking at me like I'm smoking crack or something. I just get a refund and move on.
So, next auto store. No fram, STP filters. I pick up the first one and the center gasket is deformed and (MAYBE) made it look smaller. The parts guy goes back to his computer to check and I pick up the only other one they have, and viola!!! Looks good.
I get home and she snaps right on.


So, sorry for the long lead in here. Has anyone else ever had trouble with the filters being different center diameters and NOT pressing on their hub?

yeah, they're crap! :-) Dont fit, dont seal, leak and dont filter. Go to CRC2onlinecatalog.com and order the Emgo filters by the stuffload. I usually get em 25 at a time. LOL Cheaper than the Framdungs too. :-)

Nope. No problems. CH-6000 or the STP equivalent.

As far as Fram being junk. Ya pays yer money and takes yer chances. Fram, STP, Emgo and other aftermarket folks buy their filters from at least 3 or 4 different vendors, they don't make their own. I've seen filters made in Korea, Canada, Indonesia all in Fram boxes. Look 'em over closely before you buy. But I've never had any problems
 
I think Fram is consistantly poor, moreso than any other brand I can think of.
Although, to be fair, I have not tried every oil filter ever made. LOL

I have never had a problem with Fram on all 3 GS's I have owned :roll:
 
I use K&N cause the guy down the street sells 'em cheap for some reason.
 
Check out the pressure relief valve too. I had one (brand unknown) that I could push in with next to no force. The other filter I had was just about impossible to push in.

I use FRAM for the most part and have for years. I buy them by the bulk every 5 years or so. I have never had any problems. Next time I buy them I will keep an eye out for this.
 
CarQuest ones are made by Wix too, they're good, you can tell the quality of a filter by taking it apart, a Wix filter has more filter element and uses a spring pressure relief, the fram just uses a piece of arced stamped steel. A real quick check is to look at the open end and compare the number of folds in the element..... the more folds, the more element :lol:

Ditto, I use K&N oil filters and they seem just as you would expect from K&N although I am not sure they are not outsourcing them?

I have never had a problem with a Fram filter in my life though. Car, truck or motorcycle. They have always impressed me as top notch stuff for the money. I wonder if there are different manufacturing facilities for different areas of the country because I can march people in here by the droves from around here that will tell you the same thing yet what some of you other guys have posted from other areas makes me think.

I say that because Earl states he has trouble with them and so does Dave and both are in Florida. And look at Lecroy's comment, he is up here in my area. And Earl, I'd take your advice over a sales man any day :wink: :lol:

take a closer look at it Dave, I picked up a STP filter and on it there was a faint ch6000!!!
STP repackaged Fram filters, they attempted to remove the fram number but failed to get it all off, stp does package a better o-ring.
 
Yeah, its getting so you cant trust any manufacturers to have any semblance of honesty.

The STP looks identical to the Fram, yet I couln't see the CH6000 on it.
Neither could I on the Fram?

The strange thing, the more I think about it, is that I usually buy the filter from the same Auto store, just a different location. That's the same place I got the other filter I had trouble with?
Strange.

I have had trouble with 1 Fram car filter too. THat was many years ago. It swelled up and just about burst. Other than that, I've always used them with success.

I guess I'll be buying some bulk filters.

I use wix the seals are awesome, the fiters are available local at $6 bucks
 
About six years ago, I called up the guys at cycle-re-cycle. There was a guy there that used to race the 1100s. I offered him two 83 1100ES motors and they were not interested. I think I gave him a price of a hundred each. I was moving and did not want to haul them. I was going by Indy anyway and even offered to drop them off.


So, who is cutting up the filters for the GS???
 
In 4000 miles my 89 F150 will have a quarter of a million miles on her. I've replace the muffler more times than the oil and always buy the cheap'est oil and filter. Mufflers too.

Come to think of it a Fram filter is on it now, can't rememder when I'd changed it last. Whenever I buy new tires I treat her to some new oil.

It just have to last until 07 then I'll get a 4 door F150.

Use to work part time at Avis Lube and for some reason they never let me sale anything to the customers....go figure.
