hi, when pulling the front brake, the brake light does not come on at the rear is this correct ?if not can anyone give me some points what to look at . thanks (gs550 `85 )

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.
Your brake light should come on if you activate the front, the rear, or both brakes simultaneously.
There is a little pod under your brake lever mount with a wire coming out of it. That is the limit switch for your brake light. Take it apart and inspect it (be careful, little pieces can fall out). Check for corrosion inside the switch, and clean it with electrical parts cleaner spray. Also check the wiring connection where it hooks into your main wiring harness.
It is dangerous enough riding around in traffic. It's even worse to ride in traffic without your brake light functioning properly.

If you search for brake light switch you should get a multitude of info on this subject. As Griffin stated it's probably the switch on the bottom of you brake lever mount. Clean it up apply some dielectric grease and you should be all set...

hi, i checked the switch (i think) i undone the two screws where the wires go into under the lever. when undone there was nothing in there ? the wires go on to a tiny board with two metel strips thats it....can any one enlighten me please. thanks

There should be a separate little plastic slider with a copper base that slips into a slot in the brake handle inside that hole. if that is missing your switch will not work. Short out the two strips with ignition on and the brake light should work.

It sounds like you are missing part # 9. They have a little spring in them that goes bad.

Here is the same thing on Bike Bandit's site. Yes, #9 might be the culprit, but for the effort to replace that, you might just as well get #8 and get the whole assembly.

There should be a spring on number 9, that was the problem on my bike, I stretched that spring a little and then it was all good again.
There is a replacement switch available that takes the place of the banjo bolt, uses brake pressure to make the switch. Very easy to install, similar price to the original fall apart design.

Thanks TKent!! Ive been looking for that switch everywhere...figured Z1 would carry it but i guess not. Thats handy dandy right there...anyone have any experience with it?

I have used that switch with good results. You need to protect the wires at the banjo bolts though. I used "liquid electric tape" and then covered that with regular electric tape.
