front caliper rebuild kits?

Ok guys and gals i'm stuck.
I have to rebuild both the front calipers on my 79 GS1000S and am getting nowhere with finding a good quality kit.

I am new to the site and may not be looking in the right place.
The mega welcome and BikeCliffs web site are great for how to where to get the stuff you need but after a week of checking I have nothing for the front except the K&L kits which if i'm reading correctly are mostly crap.

I have checked many Suzuki parts houses with no luck on the "Item #1" rebuild kit.
Does anyone have a suggesstion?

Have you disassembled your calipers to see if you need new pistons? New pads? If not, the piston seal (59107-34020) and dust boot (59108-34020) along with the other rubber bits seem to be available separately.

If you do need pistons, someone much smarter than I can probably offer suggestions as to where to find a suitable replacement.

As a last resort, I'm betting you could get them made locally for not too much money. Caliper pistons are a cinch for any machine shop. Get them made out of stainless steel and you'll never have to buy another set again.

I don't know if those were ever available, I checked the Boulevard Suzuki and Alpha Sports fiche and they show the piston but no little arrow to identify a part number.

Don't worry about a kit that is all packaged together, just get the parts you need form an of the dealers, like Boulevard Suzuki, AlphaSports, etc

get parts number 4, 5, 14

I don't know what 10 is, but if it's rubber get it as well...if yours is messed up

if your piston is shot, well you will have to search for a new one, Ebay and so on most of the dealers from what I have gathered do not stock them or have ever had them

I will suggest you get an extra dust boot, and possibly a seal, just in case you mess either one of them up, I damaged one of the dust boots during install, fortunately I was able to use the old one as it was not in too bad condition.

clean out the caliper very well, especially where the seal goes remove all crud especially the hard baked on stuff if you have any, clean out the bleed nipple, and you should be good to go.

Don't forget new pads.....

If your bike is not a restoration, and just a runner. The later model GS calipers are a direct bolt on. Just make sure to not get "L model" calipers since they have a different caliper hanger bracket. The later model calipers are functionally better than the early round puck parts. Less tendency to squeal for one thing. If you want to stay with the old calipers and need pistons, you might want to post in the Parts Wanted forum. Shouldn't be overly difficult to find some decent pistons, although some trial and error purchasing used calipers may be involved before you find a good set.

Check out the price of new pads............. $147.89 a set at Boulevard Suzuki, and you need two. This fiche is for the '78 EC, I don't know why they don't show them for the S model, I think the pads are the same. I picked up two sets of NOS pads on E-bay for $7.95 a set. Also, don't forget those little O rings that get compressed on the caliper axles. I thought mine were "squared" they were so flattened, but when I got the new ones they were round. Item 3 on the fische.
E-bay has lots of aftermarket brake pads fairly cheap if you can't find OEM ones at a decent price.
I don't like this fische, the arrows that point to the pads aren't right, one pad is properly identified and the other, I'm not sure what that part is.
Probably errors from the same guy that typed this fische title as Front "Caripers"

I don't believe it's a typo, it's just more of the same as in the petcock, turn signal control unit that's outrageously priced.

Checked the service manual for the GS1000S, and for the brakes it said to refer to the E model, checked the E model and it said the bores are smaller on calipers and master cylinder on the E. The '80 model is different altogether.

That being said there's two calipers on E-bay, two listings same seller, probably came off a skunk, '78 GS1000E. The right one says it has a stripped mount.
Cheap enough for parts but who knows, these might be worse than what you got to work with now.

As far as brake pads...........
You can scroll through here,
I always look to see if there's that threaded screw hole in the middle of one of the pads that secures it to the caliper.
Round hockey puck style with a protruding stud like on these.

Well I have enough to sort thru now. Thanks guys!

I will tear down the calipers this weekend to see exactly what I need.
As far as the pistons go, I work in the machining industry (35 years of it) and can make them if needed. We run LOTS of Stainless steel so they will not be a problem.

Pucks are the round stlye with the threaded hole in the back which I bought 10 years ago ($40 for the pair) when I started the project. Machine shop industry went into bad shape right after that which I will use as an excuse for the bike not being done yet.
I bought it from my brother in 2003 who bought it new in 79. Bike had not been ridden since 1985 and was in sad shape.

Bare frame restore with a total rebuild of the motor when I worked for Vance & Hines so would like to keep as stock "looking as possible" but the motor has all of Byron's tricks in it for a great street bike.

I'll post some current and before pic's as soon as I figure out how to do it.

But am I to believe the same pistons are used in '80 model also? Since they're different calipers.

If you end up running with stainless pistons don't bother using the rubber boots.

The rubber boot is a good thing. Keeps crud off the fluid seals. Just my view, but I wouldn't use those aftermarket parts if they don't have provision for a boot.

The 1980 calipers are totally different from the 1979's.
