it doesn't seem my bike ever had a fuel filter. considering the possibility of rusting in the old tank, has anyone added an in-line filter after the petcock?

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Not sure if you are aware of it or not, but there's a screen attached to the petcock inside the tank. At least there is on my GS850, I imagine they're all similar.

Yes, many do add one, some have problems. Seems some filters will work with a gravity-fed system, others won't.
Your first line of defense is the screen on the petcock. If it is intact and the tank is clean, you could probably get by without another filter. I am one of those who has had problems with an inline filter. All my tanks are clean, I have had no fuel-related problems since acquiring the bikes and going through the carbs.

i removed the petcock to take a look at the screen. i wasn't aware of it and must have missed it on the fiche.
maybe in some spare time i will experiment with a filter but i suppose i am risking starving an already lean running bike. thanks for the input

I've got a motorcycle one. I don't know how well its working but the bowls still have a little rust sediment even with filter. I used to have a paper auto filter which was probably alot better but it had to lay sideways and would cut off fuel flow sometimes. The motorcycle filter sits vertical in between carbs #2 and #3 and flows very well.
If you can find a motorcycle filter which will fit between the carbs and really work, please let us know.

Fram brand universal 5/16 fuel filters from your local auto parts store will work great. They flow more than enough and will operate when oriented at any angle. The petcock screen is no substitute for a real fuel filter. Do yourself a favor and install a filter!

Use a small filter like they use mowers. Any garden power tool shop will have a huge assortment. A motorcycle engine and a lawnmower engine are basically the same thing.
