    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I bought an 81 650e that spins like a top, except that once in a while,
without warning, it dies, then won't start again for about an hour or so.
No discernable pattern. Sometimes high speed/gear, sometimes low,
sometimes when stopped. It can go weeks without the problem, or do it 3 days in a row. Sometimes when I try to start it right after it dies, I get a backfire.
After sitting for a while it always starts right up and runs great again.
Have changed plugs & checked ignition connections.
I took the carburetors off today to clean them up.
I noticed an in-line fuel filter. My Clymer manual doesn't show any
filter. Should it be there? It does seem to slow the flow, but if that's
normal, I don't want to get rid of it.
The air filter element fell apart in my hands, so I've ordered a new one.
Any other ideas?

It sound's more like ignition than fuel. Inline fuel filters are a good idea for your bike. I have them on mine, the stock screen inside the tank won't get the small stuff that come's in most fuel and small rust particles from your tank.If it's a see through filter and you can't see alot of stuff inside it your probably ok, if in doubt change it, they are cheap to buy. But it sound's like a coil or some other ignition problem. It could be the kill switch ( if you have one) on the bars shorting out. Or a coil. I had a coil do what you describe is happening. The windings inside go and they will short out when the coil get's hot. After a cool down, all go's back to normal. It can also happen to other electronic ignition part's as well. You didn't say if it was a instant dead or a slow death. Any problems I seem to have would indicate that; fuel is a gradual slow down to quiting, and if it quit's instantly I look to an ignition problem. Good luck.

It does sould like an ingition problem, the off/run switch is the most likley place to start troubleshooting, also the ign switch do you have a big bundle of keys?? could be turning the switch slightly?? Another thing you might check is the gas cap if the vent is pluged you could have a vaporlock

Thanks. The power loss is sudden, not gradual. I will definitely check the coil and further trouble-shoot the ignition. I did put the key on a larger bundle a while back. Didn't think of that. Will pare down the key chain too. Thanks again.

You might also check the petcock. I had a similar problem with that vacuum operated valve. I'd being riding along fat, dumb and happy and the bike would quit. It was running out of gas, checking everything else I found the petcock was at fault. If you're lucky a rebuild kit will be under $20.00. If you're not the lucky type and a rebuild kit isn't made for your petcock (like mine :cry: ) a new one runs around $70.00.
 
next time it does what you are talking about open the gas cap then try running it again, like sqlynn sez it may be vapor lock, take the cap apart and clean it.

Looks like I have a bad coil. JC Whitney has coils,
but no leads. Who's bought a GS coil before? Where do you get the
proper leads?
 
Watch Ebay for coils from GSXR's, Katana, Bandits, and such. As long as they aren't the type with individual coils built into the plug boots they will work. Check out a thread in the tips section on replacement coils. You should be able to pick up a set for $30 or less.
 
water in the gas / carb bowl..... drain all of it... from the carb drain... and the gas tank
