A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Has anyone had any luck with in-line filters ? if so which one ? My tank is pretty clean but I suspect there might be some residue in there.

Thanks

I always use one. I have a Pringle petcock as the stock petcock is inadequate to flow fuel at sustained load. However the small clear filter does not seem to have any Impact on flow to my mildly tuned 1166.

Thanks, drained one of the float bowls found some specks, looks like rust,i guess im cleaning the tank again, and adding a filter, thanks again

I use one like this, mounted (clamped) to the frame under the tank. Short line to the petcock and another back to the carb "T"

Have you run it at sustained speed for any amount of time. Say couple miles at 110 mph. Seems like that was about where my engine would start to surge (fuel starvation) from the petcock. The filter I have is thru/inline and quite small with no reason to support it.

No, I haven't. I generally ride around 80-85. I got it because it looked like it would flow a lot of fuel.

Edit... Come to think of it, it does take a few seconds to catch up when I go on reserve. It may not flow as well as I thought it would.

The only time I noticed my petcock issue was on hard runs on the closed circuit track. Otherwise never knew there would be an issue.

That's good info, thanks. I never gave it much thought but... cars have fuel pumps and we rely on gravity. I'm not likely going to track this bike but fuel starvation is tough on an engine especially at higher RPM. i'll look into replacing it.

I was thinking of putting an In-Line filter in my GS850G as an extra precaution. Any reason not to pick up a standard in line filter at the parts store? I'm not going to be running high RPM's or speed for any sustained time. Would like a little extra piece of mind that any crud is getting caught before it gets to the carbs.

Would the screen on the petcock not take care of filtration?

I would like to think so but, the truth is, I've never seen that screen and have no idea what it's condition is. An in line filter is more peace of mind.

It will keep the big chunks out but is not nearly fine enough to get the small particles that will plug up the pilots and other small jets and passages in the carbs.

I have one similar to this on mine, simply because it was easily to hand on the shelf, as I'd originally bought it for my car. I now prefer the larger bore fittings and filter body, both for flow rate (never have to worry about fuel starvation) and the larger media inside will last a lot longer between renewals.
I've always used a small filter, can't say I ever had starvation problems because of them, but better off avoiding it entirely, I think.

Not particularly cheap, but it's been on there two years and is showing no signs of blockage . I simply don't trust the small cheap ones any more, as they're too anonymous, possibly restrictive, and have no data available on them.
I tend to buy from stockists like this now, as I can be somewhat sure of what I'm getting, for the same cost.

Whatever you use, test the fuel flow through it. Nothing harder on an engine than a long full throttle run up a grade or just at high speed while the engine slowly leans out.

Can't find my picture of an 850 piston with a hole in it...
