  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

That would be a great project,something I've been pondering for a while now.The MS stuff sounds like a great option,very tuneable,cheap and can be home built.
I play around with turbo Dodge 4cyl stuff,and have some spare T3 turbos that would work ok on my stock GS1150 engine (minimal boost),and I have no other project plans for next summer....
Are you planning to use a single throttlebody,or individual? I would like to try a single car TB with large plenumb and short intake runners,and try and use automotive injectors to keep it cheap and flexable with lots of options.

Your project will be worth following,as you always do great work!
 
My plan is for multi port injectors, 4 air controlers for max tweakability. Thinking about butchering a set of carbs for the butterfly setup or making some tubes on my lathe and milling machine to plug in the butterflies and throttle position sensor.

The MEGASQUIRT site doesn't seem to have a bike specific area so I am thinking of devoloping our own section. I have sent the admins an email with that suggestion.

Maybe I could adapt the old F.I. Mr Turbo kit for my old ZX11 to a GS.
It was a decent kit and ran good. you just had to adjust the stupid box for weather changes.
 
So you are trying to get bike section on MSEFI.com? That would be nice. Though I'm afraid that changes for that are quite small. I have understood that admins are quite reluctant for changes. And to be honest there isn't too much strictly bike specific things in Megasquirt installation.

If you are going to build throttle bodies by yourself anyways I would suggest to use single butterfly setup. I think that performance difference in turbo use will be minimal. But it would be much easier to build than individual throttle bodies and most likely it's easier to tune too. Individual throttle bodies have some nasty features like pulsating and not so linear manifold pressure signal which can make tuning a bit challenging.

Good luck and inspiration for your project! I have gone through this and IMO it was definitely worth of all efforts. If you have any questions about Megasquirting (or turbocharging) a GS feel free to ask, I'm happy if I can help.
 
Gotta agree with ArttuH on the intake setup if you're going turbocharged. The advantages of individual throttle bodies/carburetors drop off as the intake pressure increases relative to atmospheric pressure, and since you're turbocharging that's exactly what you're trying to do.

I'm staying naturally-aspirated for mysetup. It's just a GL model...Besides, I'm going EFI to 1) get away from carbs and 2) hopefully to gain some better economy and maybe a bit better performance out of it. I don't count on seeing any real performance gains, but after the carb nightmares I've had this conversion will be nice.

I guess that you may get some performance gains with EFI, most likely nothing dramatical but something nice anyway. When I converted from carbs to n/a EFI and replaced the exhaust I got 14 hp more and even bigger improvement to low-mid range torque.
 
ArttuH: that's your bike? Very cool. I've admired that bike since I first spotted it at the MSRuns forums. Nice work.

What coils are you using and how are you driving them? I'm looking at using a Dyna S crank trigger without an advance plate and directly driving the Dyna "green" coils I already have on the bike.

I have been using green Dyna coils by this far. Now I have already installed some Dyna "racing" coil but I haven't tested it yet. I'm using my own Megasquirt board version which has IGBT transistors to drive the coils.

What Megasquirt version you are going to use? You can use Dyna S for triggering with Microsquirt or MS2 with some modifications. Actually the stock pick-up would work too. MS1 needs a bit different trigger setup.
 
Most likely I'll be using a Microsquirt. It seems like the easiest to package.

Some here had posted a diagram that uses the Dyna S signal with the Megasquirt to drive the Dyna coils (or factory coils) directly. Seems pretty straightforward.

You say the stock pickup will work? How reliable are the stock pickups?
 
Yep, the Microsquirt is very good choice for bikes. It's compact, waterproof and has all basic features without extra modifications. Downsides are limited expansion options and price.

The stock pickup should work with the Microsquirt. The pickups are actually VR sensors and the Microsquirt supports them. You just need to lock mechanical advancer and advance timing a bit more to get suitable trigger advance.

I think the stock pickup should be very reliable if it's in good shape, i.e. no physical damage. Mine worked without problems over twenty years and 65000 miles. Apparently, I assume that previous owner hadn't problems with it.
 
I am using dyna 2000. I wasn't going to use mega for ignition just fuel delivery. Is that possible?
 
Yes, no problems. You need just RPM/tacho signal for the Mega.

Actually it's maybe even better to start with fuel only setup. Ignition side is bit more complicated and could be quite confusing for beginners. And if you try to do both fuel and ignition at the same time troubleshooting can be challenging.
 
Does anyone know if the tread with the diagram to trigger megasquirt with a DYNA S still exists. I did a search , nothing showed up.
 
I was unaware of this thread when it started in '07, was still planning on carbs.
In the meantime, I've started to consider an MS EFI conversion (n/a, w/ ITBs, not turbo).

Glad to see this thread bumped, some good info here. Time to subscribe!
Like others, I 've found that EFI conversion info for bikes is spotty.
Google is your friend.

FWIW, there's a guy on the ZRXOA board with a verrrry detailed build thread for his ZRX1200 EFI conversion. If I can find it again, I'll post the link.

wow, I have been thinking of this for some time. I am going to start a new thread since I have gone a different direction. The efi isn't the problem I am having but the location, plumbing and power consumption.

I know it has been done many times but it may be interesting to some how I install it on my kat.
 
Becoming a Daddy in '06 caused me to become unaware of many things...particularly motorcycle projects!

But my little guy has just begun his gearhead apprenticeship, and I'm getting shop-time back.
Good times ahead...
