Fuel jet question

79' GS850....Need some help here. I've torn apart my Mikuni carbs, pulled out my fuel jets and two are different from the other two, they look as though they have been snapped off at the tip (not by me...I was careful, careful). I just want to make sure that indeed they are wrong/broken before I order new ones. And if anyone has suggestion on where to buy ONLY the jet that would be great. I already ordered the gaskets and rings so I don't need the whole rebuild kit.

I have a '79 850G and mine look more like your #1 screw. Def. not #2 & #4. I think they all should look alike.

Yep. Tips are broken off. Better check the carb body and see if they're still in there. If so, they can be a bit of a pain to get out, but it can be done. I suggest trying to poke it out carefully (as not to scratch the throat) with a dental pick or scribe or whatnot. If that doesnt work, ive read that boiling them will loosen the body up enough to let it out. As far as getting them....No place sells just the fuel screws that ive found, and a couple others have looked as well. Best bet for singles is trying to locate a spare carb set, or maybe one of the guys off the board might have some. Otherwise, the kit is the only way to get them. Sudco MIGHT have them...

thanks guys, I was afraid of that. Good tip about hunting for the tips! didn't think of that. So a heads up to anyone that might have at least two fuel jets...I would be greatly appreciative.

I took mine out last night and i can see light throw the small hole that leads into the ventura on carbs 2-4 but not on #1. However, the #1 fuel screw tip does not appear to be broken as it looks like the rest of them. Maybe PO broke the tip and replaced the screw but did not take out the piece??? When i cleaned the carbs a month ago i thought i did a descent job BUT i did not notice this small hole being plugged. I def. will learn from my mistakes.

I checked the holes and low and behold one of the four carbs is blocked like a dam. I've tried to dislodge what ever is in there (have to guess it's the tip) with no avail (strand of wire from my wire brush pushed into a match stick..that was someone elses idea..can't remember who). I'll try Cafe's suggestion of boiling it and see if that works. Oh and I called my local Suzuki dealer and they can get me individual fuel jets/screws at $15 a piece...Z1 will sell me the whole rebuild kit for $18 (but they BELIEVE the fuel jet will fit but since Suzuki does not list that part on their physh they can't gaurantee its the right one...but their PRETTY SURE, ha,ha,ha.)

Well I tried boiling the carb but that too did not work. I am guessing the tip is in there and it's wedged hard. Anyone have some idea's on how to get it out??

Finely got the tip out. I used an awl, sanded down the tip and in the end had to use a hammer as well. It unfortunately increased the size of the hole but I'm going to try setting the jet down a bit further than 1 turn to compensate and see what happens. I couldn't believe how jammed that tip was. As soon as I get the O-rings I'll put it all together and let everyone know how she's running.

You changed the size of the jet (the hole). That is going to greatly affect how much fuel can go through there when the needle is out one turn. You might be better off looking for another carb body.

At best, you will have to pay special attention to tuning that carb. While the others will take a full turn, this one might need only half a turn because of the larger hole. :-k

.

The hole on my old 550 carbs enlarged slightly when driving the broken tips out (same as you). No issues when running the bike though so I'd just run it unless the hole is significantly oversize. When you adust the pilot fuel screws you might want to run those carbs with slightly less turns on the screw - say 1/8 - 1/4 turn less or so. Can't hurt to give it a try.

Good luck.

Ya I"ll try a bit of a less turn on that carb with the mixture screw and cross my fingers. I"ll let you know how it turns out.
