A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1166 with pods,g3 cams,V and H header, stock carbs
10 years ago I bought the carb kits that came with the
Adjustable needles and jets. 167 mains , clip in middle.
Screws 2.5 turns out idle around 12_1400rpm.
I can lug it around all day under 4k.
I can run it at near recline 7_9k.
But around 5_7k their is a miss when going full on.
I've read the carb stickey. Only thing I ant sure on is the float level.
Didn't realize it could be used to riches or lean.
They were set to whatever the instructions [long lost) Said!
I think gas is different than it was.
Where to Began?
And yes fire is nice and blue and valves are adjusted.
Thanks for a any ideas.

Adjust the needle heights first. I'd probably start with raising them one notch and see what happens. If the problem gets worse, go the other way.

Isnt that rpm a transition point for the circuits?

Are passages maybe just a tad dirty or gummed up?
Drop a dose or two of fuek sytem cleaner in it and drive the crap out of it crossing the threhold repeatedly.

Ok I'll raise lean the needle one.
And while their off I'll check the float level.
Sugestions on where to set it?
thanks.
Ps already blowed carb out with cleaner and air.
Then hooked it to a IV tank with 50-50 gas and sea foam
forbout ten min Boy did it smoke and pop.
Back to 100% gas now for tuning.

So, you get a stumble around 5000rpm at full throttle? That should be at the upper limit of the needle, transitioning onto the main jets. Can you try pulling the choke when you are in that zone (or as you go through that zone)? If it gets better then you are lean, if it coughs a bit then you are close and if it falls on its face then you are rich.

My 550 ran just like this. Start and low rpm just fine, WOT worked but ran out of power around 5 to 6,000 rpm. My mechanic rode it and did what Mark suggested and he said it was about one main size lean. I changed up the jet and everything was great. Mine was all stock except for the K&N filter. That was enough to push an already lean mixture into the "no fly" zone. Good Luck with yours. Oh, I couldn't do the running, pull the choke knob thing as I'm missing a digit.

I need the float height spec. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Or where do I look.
Thanks
It's raining hear today so the carbs are coming off.

Come on. I need the float setting. I've been all over Google. Can't find it. What's up.
I have a repair manual but it doesn't have it.

Thanks all. Finished up last night but no test.
Just got back, weeeeeee she's close to perfect.
Didn't hammer it from a stop yet but the problem
Area 5-7k is smooth now.
Also pulls well from bout 3500rpm on in any gear.
Haven't looked at plugs yet.
Clip now in 2 from the top.

Finally found a .094ish float setting.
Now someone sprain to me how to tune with
Fuel level.
Thanks

I'll reset the floats after I get tires on and feel safer hammering on it!

OK I thought it was good until late a friend came by on his HD and wanted me to ride.
We went up thearly road a mile and hammered them both. Came back to the shop he had a 1166 several years ago and said something felt
Weak in the middle and top, he suggested a 150 main, that's what he remembered he had in his.
Could this be right? The jet kit came with 165 and 170 for bikes with pods and header.
Could my baffle be causing This? It's quieter than it was when I built it 10 years ago,and I like it.
I just want it to run right.
Thanks.
