A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I am not Derrick, but I can tell you what it is. :-k

Very evident in the first shot, it's ... DENTED.

.

No Steve, its not....the tank has impressions on both sides at the front....I thought it was dented at first too but its not

I thought it was a GR 650 tank, but based on the tabs and the fuel filler cap, I now think it is a 650G tank painted to look like a GR 650.

ummm...I'm going with a front impact that pushed the forks smack into the tank on both sides.

Those dents should not be there. I have to agree with AZR: a front impact on a bike that I hope was not yours.

Looks dented to me. Either collision impact or intentional, but it sure doesn't look stock.

Umm..no...its NOT dented...i thought it was too until I saw it in person...it is how it was built. I dont know what it's off of if its even a Suzuki tank, but trust me, its not dented...its stock how it is
The cap and all that stuff looks Suzuki, but the "dents" are factory

It is hard to argue the point without being there, but that is a modified stock tank from a GS series, likely an 81-82 650G. Someone might have dented it to make clearance for the forks on the GL frame. Can you post pics of the left side and petcock?

OK...ok...I might have to concede defeat and apologize....upon closer inspection I think the tank might have been dented. Sorry for my earlier outburst. After all, you guys are the GS experts.
At any rate though, whoever might have dented it did not to a horrible job at it in my opinion. I think a little body filler to smooth out the ripples and it would look pretty good.
Anyway, I do apologize for my stubborn adamance in insisting that the tank wasnt dented. I think I was wrong and you guys were right. It's for sale BTW if anyone wants it.

ha,ha...no need to apologize, it's just the internet, no one is actually supposed to take anything personally (hey someone should quote that for a few others on this site). But then again there's nothing better than being right! glad you're making some progress on things.

With the fuel sending unit and the position of that petcock, I think that must be from a late 82 or 83. The bottom of the tank is pretty flat, so it could be from an "E", but the 83G tank was like the E as well.

It is not about being right, but about getting the right information.

Thanks Derrick. And you're correct...it's about tracing and recording the manufacture of these machines, so it's about getting the info right.

In looking around, I think it's from a GS, not a GSX. The GSX tanks appear to have knee cutouts as a common feature; this tank does not. There is a very subtle flattening in the knee area, but no discernable line at the front of what would be a knee cutout.
I'm pretty sure its from a T-model, say an 82 GS750T.
The thumbnail isnt exactly this tank, but if a seller on Ebay is correct, it is from an 82 750T

The dents on the red and black tank were probably put there intentionally -- maybe to clear a different triple or clip-ons. There's also some non-oem welding at the top front of the tunnel.
