    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

fuel tank sender

Guys, I have just got hold of an old GS1000 chain drive tank with no fuel level sender unit, there is one from a GS1000G/GS1100 on ebay for a good price but I checked the part numbers and they are different, does anyone know if it will fit? Photo of tank below

If the gasket is the same part number, I would say yes.
The float arm might need a slight bend in it at the most.

Who needs a gas gauge !!! I would suspect it will not fit. It is on the wrong side according to you picture..
 
Well the plot thickens...the rubber gasket part numberws are different, I had a idea it might be very different, if the 1000 chain drive and the G are on opposite sides then the tank would show full when empty...lol

I have a few tanks that I could check.
It could take a while though.
Have you tried any of those helpful/knowledgable chaps that only tend to post in the OT Section?
As they never care too much about these bikes, they tend to only stay in that section.
Perhaps you could post the question in OT?

7981GS, don't go checking anything yet (but thanks for the offer). I will drop the ebay seller a note, he is a breaker of bikes like GS1000s and the likes, he may well know if it will fit or not. I am stuck offshore on an oil rig for the next 3 weeks and I haven't even seen the tank yet so might just have to wait before I commit to any buying

Hey Lynn...the sending unit goes in on the petcock sdie and that where it is on that tank. Look and youll see the reinforced collar the bolts go into.. And despite the different part numbers, youll find that the 1000 units mounting plate and gaskest are all the same. Youll have to tweek the arm like was mentioned up or down to calibrate the sending unit to the guage though. I get exactly 2 1/2 gallons in a 5 gallon can and if the needles settles right on the half tank mark its right..if not I drain the tank, remove the unit and tweek it in the appropriate direction. Then reinstall and test again. May take a few tries to be satisfied with where the needle settles so dont get too frustrtaed.

Personally, if I were to go through the effort required to calibrate a fuel gauge (and I haven't, yet), I would do it at the REServe mark. I would put enough gas in the tank so that it runs in the RUN position. Put a hose from the petcock to your fuel supply can, apply vacuum to the petcock, let it run until it stops. That is where you will need to switch to REServe. I like to have the gauge needle crossing into the red zone at this time. That will give you a visual indicator when you are about needing to find your petcock lever, AND it also continues to register on the gauge as you use your reserve supply. While you are still in 'calibrate' mode, go ahead and let the tank run out while in REServe (or PRIme), to see just how far it goes down on the gauge. I don't really care how far over "Full" it goes, don't really care if the tank is at half when the gauges shows half, as I don't have to do anything at either of those times. When it hits the red zone, though, ... :rolleyes:
