    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

fuel won't stop flowing

I have an 82 GS650E. Lots of fun to ride. Just painted it and have replaced all the easy bits. New cables all around, new tires and brakes as well as fresh oil, filter and so on. Problem is two levels. When starting it cold, it will only work with about half choke, starts up and rumbles around 1500 rpm, no more, no less. THen, as it warms up, the choke does what it should and I can close it off and the bike will idle okay. Second, once I turn the bike off, the fuel keep coming and floods the airbox and pours all over the ground. (it won't stop until its out of gas) :cry:

I have taken out the carbs, completely cleaned them. Nothing sticks and is almost as clean as the day it was made.

I'm at the point where I am trying to install an aftermarket inline fuel shut off, but can't find one for 5/16 ID fuel lines.....

Any suggestions?
 
I'd be looking at the petcock. My 550 is doing that now, sad thing is I rebuilt the petcock. You can get a fule shut off from Dennis Kirk for about $13. I just got one, 5/16 ID. I got mine to hook up temp fuel tank for carb synching.

Sounds like an issue in the petcock. Is it in the prime position when this happens? If so, put it in the "on" position. If it is not on prime, then you may need to rebuild/replace the petcock.

I've got one more tidbit of possible bad news. :cry: :cry: Sometimes the excess fuel will drain into the crankcase as well. You'll need to change your oil and filter to make sure there is no fuel in there once you get the fuel issue worked out. And try not to run the engine if there is fuel in the oil.
 
Even if your fuel tap is faulty the float needles and seat's if in good condition would stop the fuel flow.
They are not!
 
I got my petcock rebuild kit off Ebay and it solved my problem which was the same as yours. :D

Oh yeah, I also bought the petcock rebuild kit and replaced the diaphragm and o rings. It didn't seem to help my problems.

The petcock has been either in the ON postion or the RES position, I haven't used the PRI position at all.

When I got the bike it was being run in the RES position the whole time because the petcock was impossible to turn. Now that I have rebuilt it, it turns okay and I have it in the ON position.
 
I would check the floats in the carbs, that is the only thing that will allow more fuel to enter the bowls. If they have sediment in them causing the valve to hang up then it not shut off compltely and will pour fuel out. Or if the floats are damaged, cracked and they take on fuel rather then float or dont operate properly or are hung up on the hinge pin doesn't move up and down easily it will keep taking fuel, even though it is on a suction system, it is like draining water from a pool out a hose once it starts the suction will continue, that is why even in the run position after you ride the bike and shut it off the fuel keeps coming, if there is demand from overflowing carbs the tank doesn't know the difference all it knows is there is a demand and will keep the flow going until there is a break in the suction. Fuel wont come from the tank until there is suction, just like putting a hose in a pool it wont just start draining on it's own, but once you start it going it will go till the pool is empty. That is my guess what is happening with your carbs, the floats never shut off and the gas continues to flow till the tank is empty...
